Report: Tuesday Night at Hillingdon

Mark Doel reports … Week 6 of the Tuesday night races at Hillingdon (May 10) saw all riders do one lap together in silence, in respect of Wouter Weylandt tragic death on Stage 3 of the Giro d’Italia. With a fairly strong wind blowing behind the riders down the finishing straight, it meant it was going to be hard for any riders to stay away.

Various riders tried which included Marcel Six (Twenty3c Orbea) along with Tony Gibb (Cyclepremier/Metalek)on another occasion but no one made more than about 20 seconds. With three laps to go, it was the one of the wisest and oldest heads in the bunch, Paul Doel (Team Quest/The Bike Shop) clipped off the front and gained a lead that was extended within a lap.

Seeing the danger, another veteran, Mike Inder (Thames Velo) and youngster Tom Bowering (Unattached), chased and caught Doel with a lap and a half to go. The main bunch still had not organised a chase and while there was still hesitation, the two vets drove the trio hard for the last lap with Bowering outsprinting his older companions to win.

Second place went to Inder and Doel took a well deserved 3rd. Less than two seconds later, Elite rider’s Marcel Six outsprinted Gibb. In the 3rd 4th event saw Stuart Jackson (Bath RC) winning a bunch sprint from Gregg Carr (unattached) and Mike Bowering (Swindon RC).
