Wins for Sir Chris Hoy, Lizzie Armitstead, Jon Mould, Becky James and the tandem duo of Helen Scott and Elieen McGlynn on day 3 of the British Track Championships at the Manchester Velodrome.
Day 3 Reports, Results and Pictures
Rider of the day: Of course Sir Chris Hoy, in masterful mode winning his first round of the Men’s Keirin and going all the way to winning the title.
Evening Session – Peter Maxwell of British Cycling writes…
British National Track Championships roundup – Day 3
Sir Chris Hoy kick started his long road to the Olympics with a win as he reclaimed the National Keirin title on a pulsating day of track action on Day 3 of the National Track Championships in Manchester. Hoy looked out of the running with half a lap of the final to go, but went round the outside to blast clear in the closing 30 metres to claim a brilliant win by half a wheel ahead of Dave Daniell and in the process bring the Manchester crowd to their feet.

Speaking afterwards, Hoy said: “They made me work hard for it, with a lap to go I was fourth or fifth and I went the long way on the outside. It is world class competition here, to beat these guys and to start the season the way I hope to continue, it’s a great feeling. I’ve really kept my head down and put the work in, I just want to feel coming into the Olympics there is nothing I would change. Tomorrow I’ve got the sprint and then the team sprint on Sunday so that’s the immediate future. “
David Daniell, delighted with the Silver, Sir Chris Hoy, equally happy with his performance and a top effort from academy rider Phillip Hindes.
GB’s young sprint duo Becky James and Jess Varnish battled it out in the final of the Women’s Sprint event, but James produced a performance that signalled the rapid strength in her development over the last year as she prevailed to win 2-0 overall and with it become the National Sprint Champion. The welsh rider put in two very rapid final laps to hold off Varnish – the first after diving under her opponent, the second leading out from the front.
There was a high calibre field in the Women’s Points race with World Champions a plenty all in action, including recently crowned Junior Road World Champion Lucy Garner, but it was Lizzie Armitstead who finally prevailed, taking the gold medal ahead of Laura Trott and Jo Rowsell. Armitstead and Trott looked like the early favourites and so it prevailed as Armitstead attacked at regular intervals, proving too strong for her opponents.
Aileen McGlynn and Helen Scott took gold in a very closely contested Paracycling Pursuit. As is the way of Paracycling racing these days, this pairing had to go close to world record pace to secure the win, with Shaun McKeown confrming his promise with silver and Lora Turnham and Fiona Duncan completing a good night for the tandems with the bronze.
The final action of the evening session saw 100% ME rider Jon Mould become the National Team Pursuit Champion in the 20km Scratch Race, with Adam Duggleby and Adam Yates taking bronze and silver respectively.
After 7th in the World Race Title, Lizzie Armitstead found her track leagues and won the Women’s Points race.
Morning Session:
The morning session for day 3 of the track championships saw Sir Chris Hoy and the top stars in the Men’s GB squad take centre stage for the Men’s Keirin. Round 1 and the repechages were held and all the top favourites went through, including Sir Chris Hoy and Ross Edgar via the reps.
In the Women’s Sprint, there was no Victoria Pendleton so Becky James and Jess Varnish became the favourites and after the early rounds they are on course to meet in the final. In the Men’s Scratch Race, only one real star name in Peter Kennaugh who won the Points race on day 2, was doing the Scratch and he looked very easy as he won through to the final .
There was no Victoria Pendelton for the Women’s Sprint. A statement from Team GB says “Victoria Pendleton is focussed on strength training this week as part of her preparation for the forthcoming Elite European Track Championships and as such will miss the Sprint and Keirin events at the National Track Championships. Victoria is making an exception for the Team Sprint to gain further experience with Jess Varnish. In the Men’ Keirin, Sir Chris Hoy and all the top riders from the Men’s GB Squad are here and racing.
Jason Kenny in winning form in his heat of the Men’s Keirin. The second round and finals are going to be something else!
