Season kicks off on the 25th March with the first Spring Omnium meeting then finishes, 6 months and 17 races later, with the last Autumn Omnium on 23rd September.
For the many cycling fans who weren’t fortunate enough to get their hands on Olympic tickets, the race organisers at Herne Hill have plenty of prestigious races to come and watch. This year they are making the events even more spectator friendly.
Next year see’s the return of the Good Friday International race meeting to Herne Hill. One of the world’s longest running race meetings, the Good Friday event sees famous world class riders battle it out with local amateurs. The highlight of the day is the last race: The Golden Wheel 20km scratch, previous winners include Stuart O’Grady, Rob Hayles and Malcolm Elliot. Bradley Wiggins and Chris Hoy have both raced the Meeting in the past.
2003 and one of the highlight Good Friday meetings in the last decade as Stuart O’Grady wins the Golden Wheel.
The 2nd Edition of the Dave Creasy Memorial Six will take place in September. This six hour event is based on the Gent Six Day, one of Europe’s most popular track races, so the whole event has a slightly Belgian theme to it. Last year the race was Herne Hill’s biggest track event with around 500 spectators. As well as some top quality racing to watch, there is a bar, numerous food stalls, and a cycle jumble. The highlight of the day is the Senior men’s Madison competition with some of the best riders in the country competing in track cycling’s most thrilling discipline.
The Brixton CC, Rob Jeffries Super Madison Meeting (23rd June) is back for another year along with another brand new event: The Ron Fowler Memorial 40Km and GP of London Sprint (15 July). This is a revamped version of the old Roadmans 25 mile and includes the longest race on the Herne Hill calendar.
The National Derny Champions (male and female) will again be crowned at Herne Hill Velodrome. This event takes place on Saturday 18th August. If it’s anything like last years event spectators will be treated to a very strong field of entrants competing at speeds of up to 70kmph!
As if that’s not enough they also have all their Open Season meetings (first Saturday of each month), which attract riders from all over the south of the country, and our weekly track league! Plus there are still 2 or 3 more events yet to be announced.
