His shop motto is ‘Cycling Passion’ and Matt Roberts, one of the country’s youngest cycle shop owners, is backing this up with his business Vekta Velosport sponsoring when one of the newer clubs in North Staffordshire, Newcastle RC 2001.
His Stoke on Trent shop has only been open for eight months but he decided to back the Potteries youngest club which in its 11 year history has produced two members of the GB sprint squad, a member of the Node 4 – Giordana pro team and several member of the national Talent Team along with winning a number of track national titles.
Currently they have about 40 members and they take part in all branches of the sport and promote two road races a year and help to run a successful 10 mile time trial league in association with two other clubs.
So Matt, 32 who has been in the cycling business for 19 years, having started as a Saturday part timer and racing mountain and road bikes along with triathlon, he decided that he would like to help out the club.
Not only will his name be on their kit, but also backing the club’s Percy Stallard LVRC road race on April 1st . Matt said:’ Although I have only just got the business up and running but I liked the ethos of Newcastle RC and knowing one or two the ethos of Newcastle RC and knowing one or two of their members decided to give them a bit of help.
‘They like to bring through young talent and this is something I like to see. I had planned to get the business built up before thinking of things like sponsorship. But several of my customers are Newcastle members, they were looking for help so I thought why not.’
Newcastle’s Chairman Gary Sherratt, (he also took the pictures) said:’ We were delighted to receive the offer of help from Vekta Velosport. He is just trying to get his cycling business off the ground and we as a fairly young club know what it is like to get up and running.
‘From the start of the club we looked to help young riders coming into the sport, including Kian Emadi, now on the national sprint squad, Andrew Magnier, who now rides for Node 4 and has won national track titles. Steven Hill, was for a time a member of the sprint squad.
‘On top of that we have veteran Phil Houlton winning LVRC track titles so we hope to repay Matt’s backing with some good performances this year.’
