Fife’s school children are being given the opportunity to design the starter flag that will be used to begin the first and only Scottish round of The Halford’s Tour Series race, which is set to take place in Kirkcaldy later this year.

The professional city centre cycling race is a team based televised event that is expected to attract thousands of spectators on Tuesday 15 May where ten top British teams will begin their five week battle to be crowned champions of the Series.
Linda Temple, Events Coordinator for Fife Council said: “We are developing a supporting programme to celebrate this major event coming to Kirkcaldy and there will be lots to see and do in the area on the day of the race. “To celebrate Kirkcaldy being the only location selected to fly the flag for Scotland, we are hoping that the school children of Fife will be keen to get involved and design us a fantastic flag to wave the teams off to.”
Andrew Lane, Active Schools Co-ordinator was on hand at Pathhead Primary School in Kirkcaldy to launch the competition with some children who will be taking part in the day of supporting events that Active Fife are currently planning. As well as the winner’s flag taking centre stage on the day, some great additional prizes have been lined up for the winner including a signed Halfords Tour Series jersey and VIP entry to the event for the winner and their family.
Competition entry forms are currently being circulated throughout Fife’s primary and secondary schools. Budding artists can also log on to www.fifedirect.org.uk/flagcomp for more information on the competition and to download a template to draw their design on to. The only requirement is that the design has a distinctly Scottish theme or element to it.
The route that the cycling race will take through the town centre is currently being finalised and will be revealed later this month along with details of the supporting programme that will be on offer.
