This Friday 27th April sees the return of evening circuit racing to Brighton & Hove for 2012.

The event, previously known as the Brighton Mitre Hove Crits, has now been renamed as the George Samuel Memorial Hove Park Crits.
This is in recognition of long standing Brighton Mitre member Bruce Samuel’s wishes to remember his father – who recently passed away – in the form of this thrilling and challenging cycling event. Throughout his life, George Samuel was a keen sports fan and competitor: a promising footballer when he was young and also an excellent amateur golfer; it was cycling however that was his great passion. Whilst living abroad in South Africa George was a regular competitor in the numerous sportives that are on offer and he was also involved in the official side of cycle racing, gaining his qualification as a timekeeper at the Hector Norris Park Velodrome.
George was a devoted cyclist and was on his bike as often as possible and was still cycling to work right up to when illness (he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer) prevented him from riding. The Hove Park Series trophy, which will carry his name in 2012, will be awarded to the rider that shares some of George’s determination as it will reward the rider that shows true grit and fighting spirit to take the overall win at this testing circuit.
Commencing on 27th April 2012, each evening kicks off with a 4th Category-only event over 30 minutes plus 5 laps, followed by a 2nd/3rd Category contest over 50 minutes plus 5 laps. The 1km circuit – situated at the northern end of Hove Park, East Sussex – is a tight affair that rewards shrewd, attacking riding and good bike-handling, and features a strength-sapping power climb which will have its say on the final placing. The races are always enjoyable for both the spectators and competitors alike.
Will Brighton Mite’s own Mike Coyle defend his 2011 title? Will Euan Adams look to regain the title he won in 2010? Or will we see a new challenger come to the fore & take this prestigious championship? I guess we’ll found out as the series pans out to see which rider will get to lift the new George Samuel Memorial Hove Park Crits trophy.
