News: Cycle racing heading to Cheltenham Racecourse in July

This July sees the return of an exciting three race cycle race series to Cheltenham racecourse starting on the 6th and including an Elite event on July 20.

The Velo Club Montpellier Leisure Lakes Bikes series once again promises to showcase the thrilling sport of cycle racing, with the final round bringing some of the UK’s best riders to Cheltenham on the 20th July 2012.

The first two rounds of the series (6th and 13th July) will be open to youth, 2/3/4 catergory riders and women. Youth racing will start at 7pm with the main race of the evening starting at 7:45pm. The main race will last an hour over a fast and testing circuit within the racecourse complex.

The final event of the series will see the return of elite cycle racing to the county. Held on the 20th July, a week before the Sport Personality of Year, Mark Cavendish, attempts to become the first GB gold medal winner of this year’s Olympic games in the Olympic road race, an elite criterium will be held around the famous racecourse circuit.

The first prize for the winner of the elite criterium will be a hefty £300. Live entertainment, as well as an Olympic BBQ, will be provided which will get the 2012 Olympic celebrations well and truly started. Spectating at all events is free.

Youth racing will be held every evening with various ages, ranging from Under 8s to Under 16s, all catered for. Youth racing will begin at 7pm each evening. All events are sanctioned by British Cycling.
