Ashley Cox has had a cracking start in the blue & white of Spirit RT with a second place in the Nigel Measom 2 day

New signing Ashley Cox had a dream start in his new colours of Spirit RT over the weekend. The team of four were racing together for the first time at the Nigel Measom 2 day in Leicestershire. Unfortunately, the team was seriously depleted before the race had even started with Mark Baines unable to start due to sickness and Will Jenkins unable to finish the road stage due to the same bug.
Ashley finished a creditable 7th in the mornings Time Trial, following it up with a 4th in the afternoon’s wet & very windy road stage. Sunday’s race as expected was full of attacking and an opportunity for the riders lower on GC to get away with a large group finishing 20 seconds ahead of the peloton. Sam Lawson, although racing at a higher level than he has done previously, did what he could to support Ashley and in the process learnt a lot from him.
Ashley finished a creditable and delighted 2nd Overall, unable to dislodge the overnight leader from a strong Herbal life racing team. He wasn’t however so delighted about the 2 hour ride home. Team manager Simon Howes said: “Having introduced Ashley to Ian Goodhew, a coach who has trained riders to National Championship wins, our goal for the weekend was a for a top 5 on a stage and a top 3 overall so we achieved what we set out to, and some”.
