World & National Junior Champion, Lucy Garner, leads the very strong entry of 53 riders in the Hillingdon Women’s GP, on Sunday, 27 May 2012, at the Hillingdon Cycle Circuit.

The race is the second in the British Cycling National Road Race Series. Lucy won her world championship last September in Copenhagen, with a devastating sprint at the font of a large bunch, perhaps showing superstar Mark Cavendish how to win his world championship the following day! Although this is a senior race, Lucy is favourite to win as in previous years it has often been a sprint finish from a large number of riders.
Prior to the women’s 80km/50m event at 3pm, there is the similarly prestigious men’s Hillingdon GP which has been extended this year to a very tough 100km/62.5m, unusually long for a circuit just 0.94m per lap, starting at 12.30pm, after earlier youth and lower category events.
Winning her national championship just two weeks prior to the Hillingdon event, Lucy, who lives in Leicester and rides for the Node 4 Giordana team, is obviously in good form, which was only a week after coming third in the Bedford International 2-day event, just behind Elinor Barker who leads the rival Scott Contessa Epic team.
But perhaps they both have to watch out for Tracy Best, who recently arrived from New Zealand to establish herself on the European scene, while a longshot is veteran Janet Birkmyre, from Feltham and riding for Torq Performance, a past winner of the Hillingdon GP.
In addition to a generous race end prize list, a series of lap primes will tempt riders to sprint to amass points to win a £500+ value pair of Soul race wheels, plus runner up prizes. In the men’s event, the race and crowd favorite will be Tony Gibb, Metaltek Scott, a regular at the circuit and a past winner of the GP, but his team will be outnumbered by the strong Raleigh Cycles team which has to be whittled down from 12 entries to a selection of eight.
