News: Newport Nocturne Back in the Spotlight!

Just a month after being cancelled, the Newport Nocturne, the UK’s original floodlit bike race, is back on the calendar!

With just a few weeks to go until the event on September 1st, the promoters are working flat out to get everything in place in time. Co-promoter Nick Jeggo said “We’d effectively cancelled the race, but some backers have come forward and suddenly the race is back on. It’s not just been about sponsorship, we’ve been offered all sorts of practical help too. It’s great to know that event is held in such high esteem.”

First held in 1989, the biannual race has become a firm favourite on the cycling calendar, attracting up to 15,000 spectators. Past editions have featured International cycling stars such as Mark Cavendish, David Millar, Sean Kelly and Jason Queally.

In addition to the floodlit format, the event has been innovative in other ways. Riders in one lap exhibition races are accompanied by Ferrari supercars, while the winner of the main Elite/Pro race receives his weight in beer using a set of giant scales!
