Despite no information from the Great Britain team’s PR office on who will be representing GB in ‘Zeeland’ (no Gold medal for them then!), VeloUK.net met up with one of the country’s brightest young talents, Scott Thwaites, in Yorkshire last weekend and was given the news that he and Rowsell were being given the chance of a ride after a lot of good results in stage races abroad where they have shown themselves to be the best Under 23’s in the country.

The GB team on the event website is George Atkins, Mark Christian, Owain Doull, Sam Harrison, Joe Kelly, Dan Mclay, Tom Moses, Erick Rowsell, Alistair Slater, Simon Yates and Scott.

Scott admits that it is nice to be selected adding “I enjoyed riding with the GB lads last year at Avenier and the Worlds and the course should suit me if it comes down to a sprint. You never know though in those type of races how it’s going to end up with the cross winds and attacking. The under 23 races are always attacking and it will be a good race to do”.

“I’m coming back from a break and getting back into it so I don’t know how my form is but I had a good day in Alsace with second on stage 1 so that has given me some confidence for the sprint. It was a real tough race and the heat was pretty harsh. I struggled on a few days with the heat and because I haven’t done those 10k climbs since Med in February, it was a big shock getting back into racing like that as opposed the short punchy climbs which is more my style.”

“It’s the sort of race which you go into and you know you are going to take a bit of a hammering but it is about getting form and coming out of it. I was happy to get to the last day and do what I could for Jon (Locke, winner) before getting off.”

Asked how these major championships differ to the UCI 1.1 and 1.2 races that Scott has been riding this year, he replied, “They are very similar to the 1.2 type races in that they are very attacking. A lot of the 1.2’s have development teams in them anyway so it is the Under 23 lads that are racing them. It’s a stage for riders to show the big teams how good you are so everyone wants to get their name out there and their face up front.”

“They are quite hard to read because riders will ride themselves into the ground simply to get away and I haven’t ridden the Nation Cups so won’t know the riders to look out for. You just have to be on the ball and use your head. You can’t afford to go with everything as there are so many attacks so you need to pick your moves.”

“I had a great start to the season and was flying for two or three months and at some point it had to come to an end so I have had my break and am now building up the form. With a sprint finish though, it’s about positioning and timing so if I use my head and get in the right position and hit out when I want to, I have probably got enough form to get a good result”.
