As darkness descends on Newport in Shropshire, Men’s & Women’s come out to play on their bikes as well as a special event, a Derny demo which is sure to get the crowd going

Saturday 1st September 2012 - For more details see www.bikerace.co.uk
Defending champion of the Newport Nocturne, Ian Wilkinson (Endura Racing) will wear number 1 as he heads up a star studded line up including Olympic Champion Ed Clancy. The field for the men’s race has many of the best in Britain including four from Halfords Tour Series winning team, Endura Racing. Russell Downing, Jonny McEvoy and Rob Partridge are on the start sheet as are strong teams from Node 4 Giordana, Rapha Condor Sharp, IG Sigma Sport, and Raleigh GAC.
Taking place under floodlights, the Newport Nocturne is the original night time circuit race and the crowd that goes there to support it gives it that very special atmosphere as the riders race the cobbles of this historic market town. Picking a winner could be difficult as the circuit race scene has become a lot stronger and there are so many potential winners from all the teams! It will be a fantasically close race so place your bets!
In previous years, there’s been a past masters race but new this year are two exciting new events; a Women’s Circuit race with 51 riders on the start including and a Derny Demonstration race. The Women’s event has riders from top teams including Matrix Fitness – Prendas, Abergavenny Road Club, Maxgear, Cycle Premier Kovert, For Viored, Node 4 Giordana, RST/Trigon bikes, VC St Raphael, Squadra Donne – Shutt VR, High Wycombe Cycling Club and Scott Contessa Epic to name but a few!

With the winner receiving his weight in beer and races being followed by Ferrari supercars, the Newport Nocturne is well known for it’s innovations. This year’s event will be just as pioneering. The promoters are introducing Derny pacing to fans of town centre racing.
Promoter Nick Jeggo said “We think this is a really exciting idea. We decided that if they have this sort of event in Holland and Belgium, there’s no reason why we can’t have one here. British Cycling have been very supportive and having an extra event on the programme has allowed us to attract another sponsor. It’s been tough going this year, so that’s really important.”
The event is described as a Derny pacing ‘demonstration’ rather than a race. There will be just eight Derny pacers and riders have been selected according to their pacing experience. Mr Jeggo went on to say “We’re just going to play it by ear. We’ve got a really experienced team of Derny drivers, led by Alex Wharton. Our circuit has long wide straights , so it’s suitable for this type of event in a way that many town centre races aren’t. You never know it could lead to a proper full scale race in the future!”
The Newport Nocturne takes place in Newport, Shropshire High Street, this Saturday 1st September.
