In front of thousands of spectators on Guildford high street, Kristian House was finally crowned the 2012 Tour of Britain Skoda King of the Mountains today. The Rapha Condor Sharp rider enjoyed his most impressive Tour of Britain ever, spending almost half the entire race in long-range breakaways, showing tremendous form from the 32 year old.

House started the final stage with a strong but not unassailable lead of 19 points over his nearest rival, stage 7 winner Roberto Urtasun. With his sole goal being to win the competition he knew that he had only one man to mark, but as House well knew, in cycling anything can happen.

“I was really nervous this morning, perhaps the most nervous I can remember being. Winning this title was something that I really wanted to do, for myself and for my team. I refused to let myself think about it early in the race and just took it day by day. After stage 6 though I started to believe, and this morning I knew I was so close, but I just really wanted to get it done.”

As it was the race played perfectly into House’s hands. A small move escaped from the clutches of the peloton in the first five miles and as their lead was allowed to grow by the teams controlling the race, House’s victory began to look assured.

“Once that break went I knew they would take all the points and I could finally relax a bit. It was a great day out there, and wearing the jersey on that stage was really special. There were people out there shouting my name, and my name was painted on the road, that was really amazing.”

For Rapha Condor Sharp it was a particularly sweet success; it was the second time that the team had taken the title in two years. Something that John Herety admitted was way above his expectations at the start of the race.

“We came here with a completely different team to the one that we had last year, and we came here with completely different goals. Kristian’s ride was above and beyond what we expected, but it was the result of him working out how the race was going to work, and our goal to keep the team represented in breaks throughout the week proved to be the ideal way to take that jersey this year.”

For House himself the jersey represented something equally important, “For me this ranks up there with the best things I’ve done on a bike, apart from winning the Nationals. Winning a jersey here, in this race, this year in particular with all the TV and the interest from the public was just pretty special.”

Rapha Condor Sharp’s riders will now be enjoying some well-earned rest before they take on the final race of the team’s 2012 season, at the Tour of Tobago in two weeks time.
