The Swedish champion pictured right launched his attack on the final climb – the second pass of the Colle di Superga – and found himself in the clear. However, he was clawed back before the finish by Alberto Contador, the first to cross the line at Basilica di Superga, and Diego Ulissi, who took second place.

Kessiakoff was able to hold off some big names though, including Joaquim “Purito” Rodriguez (4th), Domenico Pozzovivo (7th) and future Astana team mate Vincenzo Nibali, who finished ninth. “I am pleased with Kessiakoff’s third place,” said Giuseppe Martinelli, Astana team manager.

“Getting on the podium will really lift his spirits and those of the entire team. We are just at the start of a trio of races that continues tomorrow with the Gran Piemonte and then, on Saturday, with the Tour of Lombardy.”

“The finish on the Colle di Superga, which they rode twice, was really tough. Keeping ahead of riders like Rodriguez and Nibali is always a difficult task,” Martinelli continued.

On Thursday we will have a very different race at the Gran Piemonte, but the team is in good form. I am sure that Ponzi, Gavazzi and Grivko will not pass up the opportunity to go for a prestigious result.”
