BMC’s new World road champion, Philippe Gilbert (Belgium) will debut his rainbow stripes Saturday at Il Lombardia aided by Steve Cummings

The final single-day race on the WorldTour calendar is one Gilbert has won twice, in 2009 and 2010. It travels 251 kilometers from Bergamo to Lecco and will feature the steep climb of the Muro di Sormano, which returns to the race after a 50-year absence.
The two-kilometer ascent comes past the halfway point and features an average grade of 15.2 percent. Joining Gilbert on the BMC Racing Team roster are past world road champion Alessandro Ballan, U.S. national time trial bronze medalist Brent Bookwalter, Vuelta a España stage winner Steve Cummings, Tour of Austria runner-up Steve Morabito, past top 10 Il Lombardia finisher Mauro Santambrogio, Giro d’Italia finisher Ivan Santaromita and GP de Wallonie and GP de Québec runner-up, Greg Van Avermaet.
