Russell Downing heads up a star studded field for the Simplyhealth Monsal Hill Climb.

First run in 1930, Monsal Hill Climb has been on the hill climb calendar for over 80 years. This event was started by a few friends riding out to Monsal Head at the end of the track season and timing each other up the hill, at this time it was an unmade road. In contrast, the event now attracts local riders from the Sheffield area to seasoned professionals, all having a go at the 675 yard climb, watched by hundreds of cycling fans which use the event to meet up with old friends and enjoy watching the spectacle regarded as the finale to the local cycling season.

Russell Downing heads up a star studded for for the 82nd running of this hill climb classic. National Hill Climb Champion, Gunnar Gronlund (RST – Trigon) leads the charge with others including Adam Duggleby (Sportscover Altura RT), Andrew Magnier (Node4 Giordana RT), Matt Holmes (Team Raleigh-GAC), Matt Clinton (Mike Vaughan Cycles), Jack Pullar (Wheelbase), Liam Holohan (Team Raleigh-GAC), Dean Downing (Rapha Condor), Graham Briggs (Team Raleigh-GAC), ex Monsal winner, now vet Chris Walker (RST – Trigon Bikes), plus top female rider just back from the Worlds, Jessie Walker (Matrix Fitness – Prendas).

Russell had longed to break the 1 minute 14 second course record set by Malcolm Elliott in 1981 and will again be trying to be come master of Monsal. He’s even been on the phone to Elliott for tips! The Endura rider came close in 2003 with a 1:18 when he rode for Life Repair.

Action kicks off at 11.00am at Monsal Head. Live commentary from Mark Barry along with Brent Storey will provide a great atmosphere for all cycling fans. As always record holder since 1981 Malcolm Elliott will be presenting the prizes to all categories shortly after 1.15pm. Spectators are urged to use the car park provided and arrive early to witness the action unfold.

Event organiser, Marc Etches of Sheffrec Cycling Club would like to thank James Glover at Simplyhealth, Neil Armitage at Pelican Cycles, Peter Collins at Montura Bikes, Derbyshire Dales District Council, Litton & Cressbrook Parish Council, Keith Adamson and Little Longstone Village Group, Derbyshire Police and Ellerys Tea Room. Without your help this event just simply wouldn’t happen.
