Major events in Britain keep coming as European Cyclo-Cross Championships are held in Ipswich on November 3 with National Trophy action the day after

Chantry Park in Ipswich will be the venue for two big helpings of top Cyclo-Cross action with the European Championships on November 3 (Saturday) and then the second round of the National Trophy on Sunday.

The Euro’s event is the first time since the Worlds were held in Leeds over 20 years ago that international ‘cross racing has come back to these shores. The day will see three events; Women Elite, Under 23 Men and Junior Men.
Britain’s hopes will rest mainly on the likes of Helen Wyman, Nikki Harris and Gabby Day who in the last World Cup were all in the top 10. Wyman also finished second to Sanne van Paassen in the midweek ‘cross event, Kiremko Nacht van Woerden this week and is certainly a top chance for a medal, if not the win on home ground.
It was at the start of this year that Helen won her British stripes on the very same turf and will certainly have crowd support urging her on to what would be a memorable victory for her and the sport in this country.

The woman that beat in her Holland this week though, Sanne van Paassen, is on the start list for the Euros as are the first six from the Kiremko Nacht van Woerden event including Wyman (2nd). The British rider, for a long time Britain’s top female ‘cross rider is joined in Ipswich in GB colours by Gabby Day, Nikki Harris, Louise Robinson (former Silver medallist at the Worlds), Bethany Crumpton and Hanah Payton.
The event will see riders from Germany, Holland, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Belgium, France and Italy competing. That includes a female rider who is a legend in the sport, racing at the top on the track, road and in ‘cross, Hanka Kupfernagel of Germany.
Men’s Racing
There is sadly no Elite Men’s championship but there will be still be plenty of top male riders in action. World Cup winner in the Czech Republic in the Under 23 race Mike Teunissen is on the start sheet as are most of the top ten in that race.
They include Corne Van Kessel (Netherlands), Wietse Bosmans (Belgium), Michael Vanthourenhout (Belgium), Jens Adams (Belgium), David van der Poel (Netherlands), Emiel Dolfsma (Netherlands), Wout Van Aert (Belgium) and Vojtech Nipl (Czech Republic).
Taking them on will be seven riders from Great Britain. British champion Steve James who rides for Hargroves Cycles in domestic events will line up with trade and GB teammate Andrew Hargroves. Also entered is double Junior British champion and local rider Hugo Robinson, Luke Gray, Adam Martin, Ben Sumner and Jack Clarkson.
Andy Hargroves.
In the Junior race, GB have entered six riders; Billy Harding, Jake Womersley, Jack Ravenscroft, Adam King, Matthew Hargroves and Harry Franklin, the latter two yet more riders from the Hargroves Cycles team. They will face competition from Holland, Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Italy and Luxembourg.
Racing takes place at Ipswich’s Chantry Park where the British Championships were held in 2012.
