Tour of Oman: Chris Froome leads overall

Katusha’s Joaquim Rodriguez wins the battle of the climbers for the stage but Chris Froome now leads the overall in the Tour of Oman

Green mountain, an unlikely name for a cyclist’s battleground in the Tour of Oman, was the scene of just that as the big guns in world cycling went head-to-head to see how their legs were five months before the big goal, the Tour de France.

With his team battling to be part of the World Tour, world number 1 Rodriguez was in an aggressive mood at the end of the stage. The race to Green mountain was down as the Queen stage where the overall would be decided and it lived up to that prediction.

It wasn’t a long one at 143 kilometres from Al Saltiyah in Samail to Jabal Al Akhdhar but it was Green mountain ( which averages 10% but has two kilometers of 13% gradient,) they all had their eyes on. After ten miles, the usual early break went clear with five riders; Brent Bookwalter (BMC), Gregory Rast (RadioShack-Leopard), Gatis Smukulis (Katusha), Andreas Schillinger (NetApp-Endura) and Matthias Freidemann (Champion System).

Working together they managed to open a gap of over four minutes but the peloton controlled by the GC teams and that of then race leader Peter Sagan, Cannondale, did not let them get too far up the road before the finale on the steep slopes of this first big battleground for the climbers in 2013.

During the first moments of the climb up Jabal Al Akhdhar (Green Mountain), the battle between the top guns started. While Red Jersey Peter Sagan and Bradley Wiggins (SKY) were rapidly dropped, Alberto Contador (TST) powered away. Maybe too early. He was eventually to be caught by team mate Hernandez, Nibali (AST), and Porte (SKY) with 4.5kms to go.

In the final 3 kilometres, 8 men gathered together at the front: Froome (SKY), Evans (BMC), Contador, Nibali, Rodriguez (KAT), Elissonde, Jeannesson (both FDJ), Nocentini (ALM) and Tschopp (IAM). Just before the last kilometre, Rodriguez managed to take off. He was never to be caught and captured a fine win ahead of Froome by 4”, Evans by 22” and Contador by 27”.

Video Report of the Stage

“I knew very well this climbing, because it’s been the third year since I take part in the ‘Tour of Oman’: it’s really demanding”  said Joaquim Rodriguez. “But, I knew where to start my attack and this helped me a lot. Moreover, my teammates worked perfectly: they brought me in the first positions, in order to front that climbing at my best”.

A look at the gaps between the top guys shows just what a spectacle it must have been for the spectators with Froome at four seconds, former Tour winner Evans at twenty two seconds and Contador at twenty seven seconds. The first salvos in the battle to win the 2013 Tour de France have been fired and the only name missing was that of Bradley Wiggins but you can be sure he has eyes on the big prize down the road and not the rungs of the ladder leading to it.

Chris Froome said after the race “To have guys of the calibre of Bradley Wiggins working for you, it was hard not to be in a good position going into the final climb today. It meant I still had the legs going into the last 2k. There’s quite a challenging day ahead of us tomorrow but we’ve got a great team and we’ve really come together as a unit here. With a 24-second lead it might be hard to hold on, but it’s a great position to be in and a good, promising sign for us this early in the year.”

“I’m enjoying the Tour and it’s fantastic to see a race like this embraced so successfully in Oman. The people are so welcoming and it’s incredible scenery, not to mention the guaranteed sunshine compared to our typical early-season races.”

Evans Feeling Satisfied
Evans, who was celebrating his 36th birthday Thursday, finished 22 seconds behind solo stage winner Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha) and 18 seconds after runner-up Christopher Froome (Sky Procycling). The 2011 Tour de France winner was five seconds in front of 2012 Vuelta a España winner Alberto Contador (Team Saxo-Tinkoff) and 14 seconds ahead of 2010 Vuelta winner Vincenzo Nibali (Astana Pro Team), who was fifth on the stage.

“I’ve come here with an open mind, knowing I’ve trained well in the off season and leading into this,” Evans said. “But it is my first race and my first real test of the year. I’d say I’m very satisfied. I couldn’t have asked more from myself.” In the overall standings, Evans is 24 seconds behind 2012 Tour de France runner-up and new race leader Froome – who displaced Peter Sagan (Cannondale) – and one second ahead of third-placed Contador. BMC Racing Team’s Yannick Eijssen (10th, 1:09 behind) and the Wirral’s Steve Cummings (13th, 1:18 behind) were also in the top 15 on the stage.

Brent Bookwalter laid the groundwork for the BMC Racing Team’s assault on the final climb by being part of a five-rider breakaway that escaped early in the 152.5 kilometer stage and gained a four-and-a-half minute lead before being caught in the final kilometres.

The break including a rider from Netapp-Endura do their best to open a big gap on the peloton.

“The whole team deserves big applause today,” BMC Racing Team Directeur Sportif John Lelangue said. “Having Brent in the break was easy for us because Saxo-Tinkoff, Sky and Astana had to chase all day and we were able to save our guys.” Eijssen said a rigorous training schedule since November paid off. “This was the first day I could test myself and it proved I was good,” he said. “The finish was really intense because the stage wasn’t so hard before the climb, so everyone was fresh. I went pretty deep.”

Lelangue said Friday’s 144 km race that includes three climbs will be the last chance to shake up the standings. “If there are some breakaways going and we can place one of our guys who is not too far on the general classification, he can be a threat for the leaders and they will have to work,” Lelangue said.

Tomorrow’s stage will start at Al Alam Palace in the heart of Muscat and will revisit the impressive series of switch back climbs over the new Bousher-Alamrat road for three ascents. All coming in the final 50km of the race, two of them will offer points for the red and green jersey for the most aggressive rider, with the third climb counting as an intermediate sprint.
