DAY 2 – Road Stage – 104 miles | Day 1 Report & Results/Photos

Photos: Thanks to Graham Harper for being my pilot over the two days. Without him, the race action below would not be possible!

The second and final stage of the Tour of Reservoir, the first Premier Calendar event for 2013 was held on a cold and very windy day in Northumberland. The race over 105 miles, was over the normal course for the event which is rolling but with cross winds that had the motorbike with two people on it being blow across the road so strong, it was going to be a harder day that the first.

THE BIG ALBUM!

It was also a very attacking stage with many many breaks sticking for a while before the wind and the chase from UK Youth defending the race leader Chris Opie saw them come back. UK Youth were super strong and controlled the race for much of the stage until the end when they ran out of riders and it was left to Opie and teammate Rob Partridge to withstand the attacks from rival teams.

When it came together with five miles to go, it was looking good for Opie but then Evan Oliphant attacked and was never seen again, except from a distance and after being caught the day before a few k from the line, the Raleigh rider held on to win the stage and the overall with Opie second on both.

Lots more digs followed with eventual 3rd overall Peter Hawkins (IG Sigma Sport) involved in a lot of them

Peter and Mike Northey lead a break that gets some freedom but the pressure from UK Youth behind sees them come back. Policing the move for the race leader was Yanto Barker. Raleigh also had a rider in the move.

One of the new Kiwi riders for Node4 attacks and is chased by Declan Byrne (MG Maxifuel). Both riders blew in the wind after  a spell of freedom.

One of the rides of the race, Alex Peters went clear for a few laps solo which in that wind was some ride. He then got on the front for teammate Andy Tennant when caught.

Two laps to go with Peters almost caught, UK Youth came under a lot of attacks from different teams including Raleigh.

IG Sigma Sport were very active. As you can see from the photo, the 130 peloton is reduced to a third or less by the end.

Peter Williams (IG Sigma Sport) and Will Bjergfelt (MG Maxifuel) went clear and had a good lead of well over a minute but event that failed as the attacking behind really went into overdrive between the GC contenders.
