Ian Shows the Field a Clean Pair of Heels

Ian Field proudly showed off his National champion’s jersey when making made a dominant return to the British cyclo-cross scene by winning round 4 of the National Trophy Series at the Bowl, Milton Keynes and in doing so, led home a Hargroves Cycles/Specialized/Trant clean sweep of the top four places.

2013_NatTrophy_MKBowlReport_24

Final race of the day and it was a 1-2 3-4 for Hargroves Cycles Racing Team with Ian Field adding to his UCI tally with a victory from Steven James and Jody Crawforth. The race certainly showed the rest what they need to do if they have any chance of  beating Ian Field for the title in a months time.

Series leader Paul Oldham (Team Hope Factory Racing) finished in eighth place after a heavy fall in the opening laps but did enough to retain his leader’s yellow jersey ahead of round 5 in a fortnight’s time. With over 350 entrants in all classes of racing, Course Director Kelvin Hoy and his team succeeded in their aim of making the racing at the Bowl some of the toughest of the National Series so far this season.

“Using the natural terrain of the Bowl we’ve managed to squeeze in a 2.9km circuit that includes a number of technical sections and some demanding steps that we hope will challenge all riders. Some have even been asking me if we can bring the National Championships to the Bowl in the coming years. We’ll have to see what we can do about that!”

Steven James (centre) pulled a great ride out of the bag today to finish second and first Under 23. Second was Ben Sumner who took over the leadership of the Under 23 series while Jack Clarkson was third in today’s race for Under 23’s.

Ahead of the Senior race Paul Oldham was considering his chances of making it four wins out of four in the National Series; “It’s going to be hard to achieve that” he explained, warming up on his rollers 30 minutes before the start. “It’s a good circuit, nice and hilly but Fieldy is back. Obviously I’d like to take my fourth National round this year but looking down the start sheet there’s easily ten riders who could make this race”.

As early as the end of the first lap a group of eight riders formed at the front of the race with Ben Sumner (Beeline Bicycles RT) leading the riders up the steps for the first time. But by the third lap, with the Hargroves riders working together and Oldham having suffered his fall, Ian Field was holding back and planning exactly when and where to make his attack.

The two favourites Ian Field (right) and Paul Oldham side by side on the grid.

Ben Sumner in blue got a great start …

All around the circuit the large crown was enjoying the stylish way Field seemed to be effortlessly riding the circuit and once he came to the front, he slowly but surely with every twist and turn pulled away from the front of the race to eventually win by over 45 seconds.

Behind him a close fought battle for second place was being contested by Sumner, the Hargroves duo of Tom Van Den Bosch and Steve James, Oli Beckingsale (Endura MTB Racing) and David Fletcher (Orange Monkey Pro Team). Jody Crawford (Hargroves Cycles/Specialized/Trant) was just a few metres off the back of this group but closing fast.

Into the final lap James put in a final effort to open a small gap to take second place ahead of Crawford and Van Den Bosch who crossed the line together.

2013_NatTrophy_MKBowlReport_19

… and was quick up the steps as well.

2013_NatTrophy_MKBowlReport_18

Oli Beckingsale after two weeks hard training wasn’t 100 per cent and fell two laps from the end as well but was still challenging for the podium through the race.

Ian Field (Hargroves Cycles/Specialized/Trant)
“It’s good to come back with a victory, good points and good money! I always enjoy racing in the UK and the win is always good for our sponsors. I got a good start, just as I wanted and quickly settled into a group and waited to see what was happening. Paul crashed and so I waited for him to get back on. Ben (Sumner) stretched it, Jody (Crawford) stretched it and then little gaps started to appear so that’s when I hit them full gas.

There was probably a little bit of team work by Hargroves but it probably looked more than it actually was. I think everyone was really waiting for me to hit them and then the race kind of sorted itself out. I haven’t raced against them this season but I knew that everyone has been seeing my results in Belgium and so I think they were expecting me to make the race which is fair enough. I’m the National champion so I should make the race, I kind of accept that responsibility.

2013_NatTrophy_MKBowlReport_17

If anyone was going to ‘ride the steps’ it was Jody Crawforth and so it was.

The racing today and in the National Series is as good as it’s been for a few years. It would be nice if some of the younger guys went abroad and got that sort of experience, that’d help them move up to the next level. Steve (James) got second today and he’d definitely benefit from riding overseas. The racing is just that bit faster and that bit more full on. You learn how to race in groups because there’s a lot more people at the same level of ability. So it’s really good for experience in terms of racing and winning from groups. Even if you’re racing for tenth you’re still trying to win your group.

Today’s was a cracking course. It was tough and there were good technical elements to it, slippy off camber corners and the logs. A good all round course.

I’ve got a weekend off next week and then it’s Bradford for the next round of the National Series.

Steve James (Hargroves Cycles/Specialized/Trant)
Second place overall and I won the U23 competition so I’m really pleased with how things went today. My first goal of the day was to win the U23s, that’s where I wanted to be and where I thought I should be. But to come second behind Ian is a real confidence boost. And then to beat international riders like Tom Van Den Bosch, Jody’s a strong rider, Oli’s done the Olympics on the mountain bike and Paul’s the series leader, so to beat riders like those riders is a real good race for me today, I’m really really pleased with my result.

2013_NatTrophy_MKBowlReport_20

His sponsor Hargroves Cycles spent the money to bring his rider home and it was money well spent as Ian Field didn’t disappoint the fans.

“I loved the course” added James. “It’s a real good course, it flowed well, it had stairs, drags, flat bits, technical bits, it was a proper ‘cross course, really well thought out.”

I’ve got the Southern Area championships next week which I’ve won for the last two years so I’d like to win that again then it’s back to the National Series in Bradford. Between Xmas and the New Year I’m looking at doing some racing in Bradford but that really depends on how I’m feeling. I’m pretty much a full time rider at present so I can train with racing in Belgium in mind.

I won the National U23 cyclo-cross championships two years ago and this year I’m the U23 mtb champion so with this being my last year in the U23s for cyclo-cross so I’d really really like to win it again and finish on a high before I move into the Seniors.

Right now I really enjoy doing both ‘cross and the mtb’s and I’d like to continue doing both for as long as I can. With one being winter based and the other mainly being in the summer they don’t really clash too much. It can sometimes mean that at the beginning and end of each season I may not be firing on all cylinders. But I enjoy doing both, I enjoy the challenge of doing both and so I intend continuing doing both for the next couples of years until I have to make a choice.

2013_NatTrophy_MKBowlReport_21

Steven James was even happier to get second on his own.

Paul Oldham (Team Hope Factory Racing)
“That didn’t go to plan. I had a nasty crash, landing on my back, completely winded myself and got a dead leg. From then I never got back on. I tried to get inside Oli and in doing so went off the line I wanted to take and just went down. Because I winded myself I couldn’t breathe properly and so just couldn’t get back into the race. Hopefully that’s my bogey round out of the way, I can’t afford another bad result so, as I say, I’m hoping that’s my bad race out of the way.

Every time I got back on someone would go off at the front. I just got back on the last time and bang, Fieldy went big time. I think I retain the jersey but hey, worse things happen!”

Top 4 in a National Trophy race is pretty special and here the riders are joined by their boss, Pete Hargroves

First win of the race was by Darren Atkins who fought off a strong challenge from Crispin Doyle.

Doyle, after a spell off the front alone, was brought back by Atkins and here they fight there way through back markers.

Start of the Junior race saw the yellow jersey lead the way but …

2013_NatTrophy_MKBowlReport_06

… it was soon a two rider race as  Dylan Kerfoot Robson with his Raleigh RX bike climbs the steps ahead of  Jack Ravenscroft.

2013_NatTrophy_MKBowlReport_07

Jack was a pretty happy winner in the sprint to the line after having been beaten by Dylan Kerfoot Robson ina sprint at Durham.

2013_NatTrophy_MKBowlReport_04

Hannah Payton leads the Women’s race away with Annie Simpson right there as well.

2013_NatTrophy_MKBowlReport_05

Simpson had a good go at trying to ‘break’ Payton and Spanish rider Pacios Pujado but in the end lost touch with the leaders to finish 12th. No word on whether she had a problem…

2013_NatTrophy_MKBowlReport_08

The win, a first for a Spanish rider in the Trophy went to Pacios Pujado.

David Barnes   leads the Youth race away

2013_NatTrophy_MKBowlReport_13

He may have been pushed all the way for the first time in a while but Dan Tullett (Hargroves Cycles) still showed who was best and won the Under 16 boys.

2013_NatTrophy_MKBowlReport_12

There was a great battle between the girls in the Under 16 category lead here by  Connie Hurton from  Charlotte Broughton and eventual winner  Jessica Roberts  (below) sponsored by the Cycle Division (RST/Trigon).
