Matt Botrill rode to a course record and new personal best in the Rugby CC 10 Saturday afternoon.

With some of the hottest weather hitting the UK, 125 riders, took part in Rugby CC 10mile time. With the heat and low air pressure, plus hardly any wind, it would be a great day for the all taking part.

Riders got underway at 2pm and the times being set were a good indication that it was a good day for racing. The course started near Rugby, and riders rode on a out and back circuit with three roundabouts to negotiate and one major climb. It could hardly be described as the fastest course in the country with the previous course record of 19:25 set by Matthew Clinton in 2013.

The first rider just outside 20 minutes was the man known as the missile down to being so aerodynamic on his bike – Mark Jones www.drag2zero.com 20:06. It was not long before another Drag2zero rider was home, Jon Simpkins 19:54. But inform Matthew Clinton (Mike Vaughn Cycles), in the form of his life blasted around the course in a vey rapid and new course record of 18:50!

4pm came the turn of Matthew Bottrill www.drag2zero.com, with 16 win’s already under his belt and with just one week away before the National 25 mile championships, Bottrill was on a mission to test his legs one final time!

Not disappointing, there was a new course record and to top in all off, a new personal best of 18:25 was set! A full minute off the previous course record. It’s been a very stressful few weeks for Bottrill.

A planned attack on the UCI hour record was planned for early September but at the start of this week, it was announced that no rider with out a bio-logical passport could attempt. (Basically only world tour riders)

So summing up the past few weeks Bottrill replied “I’m not going to lie, it’s been a really stressful few weeks, myself, sponsors and friends have put so much work into the hour record, and the rules never stated anything about the bio-passport. We have tried asking the questions why? But it’s very clear the UCI don’t want me to do it”.

“I’ve done the training and the testing so know 49,7km is possible to break. But it’s just not going to happen. I’m gutted to be honest. But it’s taking is much out of me, and caused so much stress I just need to forget about the whole thing. I might look into the masters in the future, but it’s never going to compare to the men’s hour!”

“But back to the race today, I felt good. I’ve was nervous before the start after battering my body 5 days with intervals this week. But once the adrenalin kicked in, I was flying”
