Cycle fever is showing no signs of abating as the organisers of Sunday’s Winchester Criterium announce a record entry and demand so great in one category they have added an extra race into the programme. The field includes many who raced around the exciting city centre circuit last year such as Elite Men’s winner Andrew Hargroves (Felt-Colbornes-Hargroves RT) along with many newcomers including a trio from Winchester City Council (Chris Peach, Tim Clarke and Andrew James) taking part in the new Corporate Challenge race.

It’s not just local cyclists and fans getting excited anticipating a great day of racing but top local businesses who have got involved. These include Cytronex, who opened their first concept store in Winchester at the end of 2013 on Bridge Street and stock many top cycling brands, and Montezuma’s, Britain’s leading and most innovative family luxury chocolate maker who are based in the city.

The day is not just about elite cyclists though with Winchester City a buzz of activity throughout the day starting with CycleFest opening at 10am full of interesting cycle displays and activities. Then at 12noon families, beginners and all comers take to the closed road circuit for the MyJourney Hampshire Winchester Family Cycle Ride. Registration for the family ride is free and available in advance through the Winchester Criterium website and will also be available on the day subject to capacity. Large crowds are anticipated to line the barriered circuit to cheer on the racers, with the first race at 2pm.

Cllr Jan Warwick, Portfolio Holder for Environment, Health and Wellbeing said, “Be prepared to see some exhilarating races at close quarters, sprinting out of Winchester’s historic street corners and the intensive competition in the last lap for the finish of each race in the Upper High Street. We are delighted to be a part of this ‘Formula One’ style event as Winchester City Council is keen to promote cycling in the city and throughout the district in every way.”

The Winchester Criterium is returning to the City this year through a partnership between Winchester City Council and Pennine Events and the support of local business groups and companies such as Winchester BID, VC Venta, Winchester Rotary, Cytronex and Montezuma’s is essential to the event’s success.
