Travelling difficulties caused by the road closures for the Manx Grand Prix motor cycle racing practices resulted in a slightly smaller than usual entry of 197 competitors for round eighteen of Team RL360 Isle of Man’s Youth League, staged at the NSC last Tuesday evening in sunny but breezy conditions.

Oliver Corkish put in one of the best performances of the night in the born 2005 category. The Port Erin youngster attacked breakaway partners Harry Kneen and Tyler Annis at the start of the final lap and powered away to a fine solo victory, his first of the series. Kneen edged out Annis for the runners-up spot and James Scott got the better of Harry Boyle in the rush for fourth. Leading girl Ella Griffin came in on her own for a safe sixth, with Callum Salisbury heading Harley Howland-Smith, Harvey Comaish-Coole and Lena Coole home for seventh.

In the novices class Emily Rewsin scored another comfortable win, crossing the line well clear of Tristan Speight in second place. Abigail Cowell overtook impressive newcomer Pierre Christian in the closing stages to grab the final place on the podium, with Max Messenger taking the sprint for fifth ahead of fellow chasers James Corlett, Jayjay Plowman, Evie Wright, Dylan Honeyman and Isabella Clarke.

Notching up his third success of the season, Cameron Hounsell held off Zach Jones in the tussle for the top spot in the born 2009 & later age group. Kylan Murphy was a lonely third and top girl Grace Wolstencroft outgunned Joseph Barker and Graihagh Morgan in the dash for fourth. Harrison Skillan and Kyle Roosenbroek trailed in separately for seventh and eighth, while Aoife Hughes had the edge on Joshua Cross, Hugo Howland-Smith and Amelie Geldart in the battle for ninth. Aedan Larkham led the rest of the field in for 13th spot.

Alec Sorby went from the gun in the born 2008 event and stayed clear to the finish. T.J.Teare and Freddie Griffin held their positions in front of the chasing pack to claim second and third, with Ollie Eyres beating off strong challenges from Edward Field and Ryan Nelson to secure fourth. Lennon Moore was a lonely seventh and Ryan Batty outran Leon Murphy in the race for eighth. Charlotte Geldart took the girls’ honours in tenth spot.

Preserving his unbeaten record, Cian Howard led from start to finish in the born 2007 class. Orry Lund overcame Rio Kelly, Florence Griffin and Charlie Scarffe in the gallop for second, while Jordan Carter kept Ellana Skillan at bay in the fight for sixth. Olivia Quayle was eighth and Samuel Barker maintained station in front of Lucas Brockbanks for ninth. Joseph Devereau claimed eleventh spot after a fiercely contested sprint with Jessica Scott.

In the born 2006 race Owen Collins got the better of fellow escapees Ivan Sorby and Drystan Sewell in the final dart for the chequered flag. Nicola Quaye beat Tom Caine in the struggle for fourth and Connor Moughtin was too quick for Rebecca Cooil and Harry Callin in the scrap for sixth. Lucy Field and Samuel Devereau completed the top ten.

James Devereau outsprinted Kiera Prentice and Ben Boyle for the honours in the poorly supported born 2004 category, while Tyler Hannay got the verdict over Matthew Cooil and Joseph Corkish in the group gallop at the end of the born 2003 & earlier grouping.

Completing the double, James Devereau came out on top in the bunch sprint that decided the outcome of the under 10 racing bikes. Ralf Holden was second, closely followed by Cameron Dudley, Kiera Prentice, Ivan Sorby, Owen Collins, Cian Howard, Drystan Sewell and Harry Kneen. Tyler Annis filled the remaining place on the top ten leader board.

In the under 12 racing bikes Aaron Lund took the win ahead of Tommy Skillicorn and Matthew Black, who made a spirited but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to get away on the final lap. Jake Wilson, Will Corkill and Tyler Hannay rounded off the top six, with Shellan Leeming grabbing the girls’ award in ninth position. Newcomer Chris Nobbs was a very good tenth on his debut.

A fast moving breakaway group of seven riders took charge of the under 16’s race. At the finish it was Matthew Draper who headed the final charge, crossing the line with a small advantage over Owen Dudley, Conor Davies, Michael Moss, Will Draper, Thomas Bostock and Nathan Hinks in second to seventh places respectively. Tara Ferguson led Eleanor Davies home to take the girls’ prize in 13th position.
