With just three track league meetings remaining on the calendar for the year, there was a strong turnout of junior riders for event 19 – although the senior numbers have started to dwindle as the season starts to draw to a close. Those who did turn up for the evening’s racing were treating to unseasonably warm and, most importantly, windless conditions.

First event of the night was the C riders’ 6-lap scratch race. With a huge field of 29 riders assembled, there was a palpable determination by some riders to break from the start which meant a fast pace was assumed from the gun. The fast pace ensured the group splintered very quickly and, with the bell sounding, the first main peloton was a clear half lap ahead of the second. Continuing his strong run of sprinting form from the previous week, it was Charles Page (Hillingdon Slipstreamers) who got the better of his rivals, crossing the line 0.16 seconds ahead of second placed Thamana Nel (i-Team CC). Cameron Thomson (Palmer Park Velo) took third place.

Next event of the evening was the A riders trackcycling 10 lap scratch race. The eight riders stayed in a tight bunch for the duration of the race and, with Hugh Knudsen (Team Tor 2000) leading into the last lap, it was still anyone’s race. Neil Rutter (Cotswold Veldrijden) took on the challenge from the back straight and, with his fast finish, was able to hold his advantage to the line finishing a third of a second clear of second placed Nick Abraham (BC Private Member) who also clocked the fastest lap in the final lap of the race. Donal Linehan (Newbury RC) claimed a well fought third place.

The B trackcycling 10 lap scratch race took a similar format to the A race with the riders remaining in a tightly formed bunch until two laps remained on the board. With two laps remaining, Nick Cammell (Mountain Trax RT) and Tom Zittel (Willesden CC) injected a burst of speed and briefly gained an advantage over the peloton, but were quickly consumed. Clearly not fatigued, however, Cammell went on to take the victory by a clear 0.3 second margin ahead of David Ivory (Reading CC) and Henry Dawson (Prestige VC).

The keirin heats followed, although some of the races were run as a straight final. The first of these was the ladies’ race: seven ladies started the event, with Claire Kitching (Newbury RC) finding herself in the first position behind the derny in the first lap. When the derny peeled off, the race became a fast and frenetic affair, and it was Emma Clarke (Palmer Park Velo) who managed to seize victory ahead of teammate Amber Joseph by just three-hundredths of a second. Despite a strong fight by Kitching to stay in contention, it was Lorna Bowler (Hillington Slipstreamers) who took third place.

The U14 boys race was also run as a straight final, with seven riders starting the race. It was Sam Dawson (Palmer Park Velo) who timed his race to perfection and, with a fast finishing straight, finished a quarter of a second clear of Callum McQueen (Palmer Park Velo). Max Reed (Palmer Park Velo) took third place.
The final keirin race to be won as a straight final was for the A riders and, with a strong line up, an exciting finish was guaranteed. Ian Greenstreet (Newbury RC) found himself positioned directly behind the derny and, with that positioning, it seemed likely one of the sprinters in the group would sweep past Greenstreet as the derny peeled off. However, Greenstreet managed to create a small gap between himself and the bunch as the derny retired. Rutter chased hard, but was unable to overcome Greenstreet who crossed the line ahead of Rutter by just six-hundredths of a second. Abraham took third place.

The devil races followed the initial keirin races, and first up were the C riders. With 25 riders starting, the race was set to last 12 laps with two riders being eliminated each lap. The familiar trio of Anthony Anderson (Sigma Sport), Carl Jolly (Hillingdon Slipstreamers) and Page were the three riders left in the final lap and, with a strong sprint in the final straight, Anderson was able to take the win ahead of Jolly and third-placed Page.

A much smaller group of just six riders started the A devil race and, with Frazier Carr (awcycles.co.uk) being the last rider to by eliminated in the penultimate lap, just two riders were left to contest the final lap. Rutter easily took the win, with Abraham 2.5 seconds behind for second place. A slightly larger field of riders started the B devil race. Three riders were left for the final lap: Cammell, Ivory and Zittel. Cammell demonstrated how his zest for speed is unrelenting and sprinted strongly in the final straight to cross the line in the first place, with Ivory exactly a tenth of a second adrift. Zittel took the third spot.

Two keirin finals were next on the agenda. First up was the U16 boys/novice/vets final. Six strong riders were pitted against each other and the ensuing race could not be anything other than fiercely competitive. The race took a similar format to the A final earlier in the evening: Anthony Anderson (Sigma Sport) found himself behind the derny going into the final lap and, whilst not necessarily the preferred position of many derny specialists, Anderson was able to hold onto his lead for the final lap despite the best attempts of his competitors. Jolly took second place and Thomson third. The B keirin final turned out to be the most competitive keirin race of the night. Sam Grant (WDMBC) positioned himself in second place behind the derny and, going into the final lap, was in prime position to accelerate through for the win. In the closing stages, Grant was able to pass Dawson to snatch victory by a mere two-hundredths of a second. Guest rider Harry Strudley (awcycles.co.uk) took the final podium spot.

The second C scratch race of the evening followed and, despite the late start, still attracted a large field of 21 riders. As in the six lap scratch race earlier in the evening, the fast pace from the start split the bunch into three disparate groups. This time, it turned out to be Page’s chance to shine: Page, who had intelligently positioned himself towards the front of the leading peloton, increased his pace in the final lap to pass the three riders ahead of him to take first spot. Dylan Thomas’ (Palmer Park Velo) dogged determination to stay in contention was rewarded with second place, with Pete Osborne (BC Private Member) taking third.

The next event was perhaps the most anticipated of the night: the West London CA 1km time trial. As the evening formed the final opportunity to contest the trophy, the six available spots were filled by determined riders. The first heat consisted of Greenstreet and Cammell. Greenstreet was currently leading the competition with a time of 1:13.10 ridden earlier in the season and, with the colder autumnal temperatures, bettering that time was a strong ask. However, a fast starting lap and a strong second lap meant Greenstreet clocked a time of 1:12.50 – a time which not only bettered his leading time of the year, but was also an event record; bettering i-Team’s Joe Truman’s time of 1:12.99 from the previous year. Cammell, who was drawn in the same heat as Ian, rode a three minute personal best to clock a 1:17.70. Oliver Hitchings (Peter Hansford Racing) was sadly unable to better his time to contest with Greenstreet’s and clocked a time of 1:13.69.

Despite the late hour of the evening, the unknown distance race was a whole six laps this evening. Whilst Nick English (awcycles.co.uk) had himself positioned perfectly to challenge for a win in a four lap race, the bell failed to sound. Instead, the bell sounded after five laps and Zittel found himself at the front of the field. This time, however, it was Rutter’s chance to shine and he used Zittel as a springboard to power himself to the front of the race to take the win from B rider Cammell by two-thirds of a second. Abraham took second place amongst the As, whilst Donal Linehan (Newbury RC) took third. Ivory was second for the B riders, whilst Tomasz Dereszynski (BC Private Member) was third.

A rather depleted field started the awcycles.co.uk 20k race at the end of the evening, and the race assumed one of the slowest paces we have seen this year. Carl Jolly (Hillingdon Slipstreamers) and Frazier Carr (awcycles.co.uk) were the first riders to make a discernable break after fifteen laps, but were swallowed up by the bunch within four laps. With the bell sounding, it was English who found himself at the front of the bunch. Sadly for English, Rutter was positioned in his slipstream and was perfectly positioned to use him as a springboard for the win. And use him he did: Rutter powered down the final straight to take the win by two thirds of a second from English. Greenstreet, chasing hard, got the consolation prize of third place. Anderson and Jolly, finishing in fifth and sixth overall, took first and second amongst the C riders with Thomas taking third. Grant, Nicholas Beech (GS Henley) and Zittel took first, second and third respectively for the B riders.
