In 1964 Dave Sennitt and Harvey Wright both joined Mildenhall & District Cycling Club, as it was known then and have remained members ever since. Although Dave Sennitt no longer rides, Harvey still participates in many of the events the Mildenhall Club holds. Both are active members of the Club’s organising committee for the highly successful Mildenhall Cycling Rally, the club hold every year over the August Bank-Holiday weekend.

Held in the superb facilities provided by the West Row Village Hall, nearly a hundred current and ex-members, friends and family members gathered to join in the celebration. They also included old adversaries such as Rodney Briscoe, who used to race for Diss and District CC, although as he said, “we used to race against each other but I got to know Harvey and Dave socially as well. We even went to Butlin’s one Christmas together!”

After a barbecue and salad lunch provided by members, the Club’s Chairman Mark Burchett thanked everyone for coming and helping them celebrate the remarkable achievement of Dave Sennitt and Harvey Wright.

He said ”In today’s world it is becoming increasingly hard to find such loyalty and it is a real pleasure to be here to honour Dave and Harvey, who have been members of our Club for 50 consecutive years.”

“In many ways it is quite fitting that we’re celebrating their feat together as in the early years they would travel together to grass-track races, with Dave’s dad Harold the driver.”

“During the last 50-year’s they have proudly worn the Mildenhall colours in representing us not only across the Eastern region, but further field as well.”

“They now join a very elite group within the Club and together with Dave Bowers, between the three of them have 155 years of membership. There can’t be many cycling clubs that can boast such a feat!”

The celebration may not have been a surprise to either cyclist, but the presentation of a Photo Book charting their respective lives over the 50 years, most certainly was. The Club’s President Peter Bentley made the presentation of these and a framed photograph each.

As well as these mementoes, members Jean Poole and Viv Bowers also deserve praise for the display of photographs and old records they had put together, that provided many talking points!
