The 5.2kg machine weighs a little bit more than the stock £11,000 Emonda SLR 10, however this one comes with real paint and not the superlight Vapor Coat finish!

A press bike, lent to Matt by his sponsors Trek UK, came with full Dura-Ace 9000 and Bontrager Aeolus 3 clincher wheels with the finishing kit all Bontrager.

The first thing Matt did was swap the clincher wheels to Aeolus 3 tubular shod with Veloflex Record tubs which Matt has been using all season on the TT bikes.

This saved nearly 500g. As a special race-day only wheel, for the Championships, he used a FFWD F2R front rim laced to an American Classic hub built by Cyclepowermeters. This front wheel weighed a scant 390g, while he used a 140g 19mm Vittoria track tubular.
The rear wheel remained the Bontrager to cope with the near-on 550 watt effort needed.

The front mech was removed, the chain replaced with a KMC SL and shortened. For the Nationals, Matt locked out his 25 sprocket, to both keep the chain-line straight and to keep him on the power! The Dura-Ace cranks were swapped for a set of 177.5mm SRAM cranks with a single 39t ring – it had been worked out, when standing, these longer cranks would increase power by up to 3%!

Front shifter was also removed along with the bar tape, instead replaced by a Shimano R400 brake lever. Pedals stayed with Matt’s tried and tested Dura-Ace 9000, while the bars were a set of super-light integrated Bontrager XXX-Lite
