World Track Cup London – Day 1

The Great Britain cycling team won double gold on the opening day of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup in London with victory in the Men’s and Women’s team pursuit.

Men’s Team Pursuit
After qualifying second fastest, almost two seconds slower than the Australian’s, the Great Britain squad had to fight tooth and nail to get to the final for Gold in London where they won easily against New Zealand. In Round 1 they came up against Denmark and their winning margin there very tight indeed as the photo below shows.

But if they had a battle, the team with lady luck against them were the Australians. Down to three riders and cruising to a win in round 1, one of the three remaining Aussies, Davison, punctured and whilst doing well to hold it up, the race for Gold was over as they were DNF and finished the competition in 7th. Had the race been run under the rules of previous years, and the same happened in the final against the Brits, they would have at least got the Silver. Another example of the stupidty of the new rules that get worse from the UCI, not better. Teams may also now think hard about going down to three men in the early rounds as it can be very costly as it proved for the Aussies in the race for qualification points for Rio 2016.

Women’s Team Pursuit
After qualifying where there was so very little between Great Britain and Australia, the final was a more ‘comfortable’ victory for the Brits as Laura Trott, Ciara Horne, Katie Archibald and Elinor Barker held off the Aussies in the final for the Gold. The GB team, World Cup leaders, used three different combinations over the three rounds to repeat their success in the opening round of the Track Cycling World Cup in Mexico last month.

Double Olympic champion Laura Trott, who rides the omnium starting on Saturday, was replaced by Ciara Horne in round 1 as Great Britain caught but were not allowed to pass the USA who are listed as DQ. In the final, Trott returned to the GB line up whilst London 2012 gold medallist Joanna Rowsell, on her way back to full fitness, had to watch from the track centre.

With Trott in fine form, the GB foursome were a little ragged but they regrouped to finish ahead of Australia. Trott said afterwards “We want to win every race but people are getting better and better. It’s getting harder. You definitely feel the pressure now. It’s that battle to get into the squad that keeps us going.”

Session 1
With one session done, it’s the Team Pursuiters in the Great Britain team who are leading the way for their country. The Women’s GB quartet qualified fastest in the women’s team pursuit, 4:23.406 to the 4:23.498 of the Aussie foursome. The GB quartet of Laura Trott, Joanna Rowsell, Katie Archibald and Elinor Barker will now face USA, who were fourth and nine seconds slower, in Friday evening’s round 1.

In the Men’s Team Pursuit, the Great Britain four riders finished qualifying second fastest. Ed Clancy, Steven Burke, Owain Doull and Andy Tennant recorded a time of 4:02.373, just under two seconds slower than the fastest team from Australia. The Brits will now face Denmark in round 1 who were third fastest with 4:02.428 so on paper at least, it will be a tough match for the GB riders with the Danish team so close on time in qualifying.

In the other races, Great Britain were dissapointing on their home track with 5th in the Women’s Team Sprint, 7th in the Men’s Team Sprint after Gold in Mexico and Emily Kay tenth for the Welsh team in the Women’s Scratch race.
