The British Championships returned to Abergavenny for the second time in a year after the Road Champs were held in the town in June 2014. This time, it was the turn of cyclo-cross to take centre stage and it was wild start to the event.

During the night before the racing started, marquees were blown down and barriers were having to be stripped of banners because of the strong winds. The early morning rain soon disappeared and the winds became less strong but were always a factor in the racing.

The course was similar to previous years with more technical sections added and did seem quite long with the races only a few laps long.

Veteran Women

day1_Report_001

The day began with the Veteran Women and a legend in the sport after winning so many titles as a senior, Isla Rowntree continues to rack up Gold medals as she won the Veterans category. Finding her way to the front, Isla was never challenged and she was gaining a dozen seconds or so each lap winning by just over a minute from Maddi Smith. Marie Jackson was third a further two minutes back with last years champion Tracey Fletcher in fourth.

day1_Report_002

The race race on the course saw a handful of new British World Champions taking part and it was one of them, Phil Roach on his Raleigh RX cross bike who led the field for much of the first lap (above).

Behind Phil, a chase was on led by Grant Johnson. Chris Young was gritting his teeth in the chase close behind and following him was another of the World Champions in Steven Davies (Hargroves Cycles).

Eventual winner Tim Gould was biding his time though and by the time the second lap was completed, a rider regarded as a legend in the sport had hit the front. Gould and Young had Johnson for company but Gould kept the pressure on and was soon leading alone with Young chasing hard and Johnson slowly losing ground to Roach and Davies. Gould held his lead all the way to the finish to take the race from Young with Roach coming back up into third.

day1_Report_003

Tim Gould seemed to be enjoying having dropped his great rival Chris Young and leading a Championship race.

day1_Report_004

No doubting the joy of Tim Gould in winning the over 50 race.

Youth Under 14 Boys

day1_Report_007

After the Veterans came the youngest Youth category, Under 14 Boys and Girls. First away were the Boys and Ben Tulett (Hargroves Cycles-Ridley) got a great start on the opening lap only to have a mechanical and then spent ages trying to fix it. It was to no avail and he had to run over a kilometre to the pits by which time he had not just lost the lead but any chance of a medal.

day1_Report_006

Ben Tulett battles his way to the front of the race but he’d lost too much too time to get a medal.

Lewis Askey meanwhile, took the lead and whilst he was chased hard by Jenson Young who could see his quarry but Askey just pushed the pedals harder and held his lead all the way to the line where it was easy to see what the victory meant to him. Young was second with a member of the Craig family, Charlie, the first to get on the podium for the weekend with third.

Youth Under 16 Boys

day1_Report_011

Dan Tulett punches the air as he wins his second Under 16 title.

As expected, the winner of the Under 16 Boys race was Dan Tulett who’s won in Britain and Europe all season and did not disappoint in Abergavenny. Within a lap, he had put a lot of daylight between himself and the scrap for the minor places.

The chase saw many of the medal favourites in a small group behind Tulett but soon Tom Pidcock, son of Otley Town Centre races organiser Giles, was forging clear and whilst he was unable to challenge Tulett, he was holding a good gap on Harry Yates (Hargroves Cycles) chasing back in third. That was how it stayed and Tulett had a second champions jersey from the Under 16 category.

Youth Under 16 Girls

Another rider from the Paul Milnes Cycles team was crowned champion in front of many a very pleased fan from family and friends alike. Sophie Thackery was the only rider not to get lapped by Dan Tulett on the final lap and so had to do a lap of honour, unable to be beaten as the riders in second and third had finished after Tulett crossed the line.

Thackery though, crossing the line to get the bell only seconds before Tulett crossed the line, had to take care on that final lap to ensure she crossed the line which she did much to the delight of her family at the finish.

Another title for Nick Craig

The favourite for the race, Nick Craig, won and won well but the start of the race saw Darren Atkins getting a fast start and leading the first lap. Craig though and Ian Taylor, the National Trophy winner for the Over 40’s, were soon leading and had gapped Atkins who in turn had a good lead over any threat to his bronze medal placing.

Taylor and Craig seemed very evenly matched and there was some thought that perhaps Taylor really had stepped up a level for this race. Alas for him, the pressure from Craig put Taylor into the red one too many times and the gap opened and Craig led solo.

That was how it stayed with Nick Craig winning from Taylor and Atkins.

day1_Report_019
