Thanks to Dean Barnett
The splendid grounds of Misterton Hall, nr Lutterworth, Leicestershire hosted The League of Veterans Racing Cyclist National Cyclo-cross Championships, promoted by Welland Valley Cycling Club. With a converted National jersey, gold medal and cap up for grabs, the competition in the 5 year band age groups was intense.

There was the added bonus that four World Masters champions took to the start line on an experimental course with the lap distance shorter than normal to enable spectators to watch at regular intervals the speed and agility of the competitors.

As the sun shone over the estate the championship was started in three age bands with twenty seconds between each band. An overnight frost had started to thaw, but sections of the course in the shade remained icy requiring the riders to be ultra-alert.

Phil Roach – Team Jewson – World Masters 50yrs plus dominated the race as he soon made up a twenty second gap on his younger competitors to smash the opposition and maintained an impressive pace around the 1.1mile circuit. Through-out the age groups the racing was tight, the only upset was promoting clubs Vic Barnett struggling with illness finishing off the pace as Phil Cooper won the 65 to 69 years age group.

First lady was former National Masters Champion Tracy Fletcher ahead of Welland Valley’s Nicola Traynor.

There was a full programme of supporting races prior to the championships. In the Under 12’s race Max Walling – Leicester Forest – blasted away from the start line never to be challenge on a shorter course. William Ryan – Solihull CC- finished second ahead of the promoting clubs Edward Hopkins.

Emile Alexander suffered a mechanical in the first quarter mile which resulted in a long run to the pits for a replacement bike. The mechanical didn’t stop the Team Lichfield rider slice through the field in freezing conditions to take the victory from Oliver Bell – Leicester Forest. There was a dramatic sprint for third between Max Sillifant and Josh van Nierop. Josh took the final spot on the podium with an explosive lung for the finish ahead of Max. George Evans crashed when in contention, he remounted to finish a strong 4th. Amy Garner – WVCC- was first Youth girl.

In the combined Senior, Junior, Under 23’s, Ladies and Vets race Matt Barratt – Renvale/Cannondale- to round off his cyclo-cross season ahead of Under 23 rider Joe Atkins – Ride Coventry. Matt looked in total control as he mastered the technical course with great ease. Joe looked also in the groove as he flowed holding off a challenge from Junior rider James Garratt – Welland Valley CC. First lady was Jules Toon – Torq Performance – who finished an impressive 10th overall.

Organiser Dean Barnett would like to thank all the members and friends of Welland Valley CC for their support over the weekend completing hundreds of different tasks, the LVRC for allowing Misterton Hall to host the championship and finally Mrs Craven for her continued support.
