A long standing race in the UK racing calendar (ten years), the Northumbrian Water Tour of the Reservoir sees changes to the course and schedule for 2015.

Based in the very pretty and historic village of Blanchland (Northumberland), the race for many years now has been one of the early season major events and last year added a Women’s event to the race programme making two very full days of racing.

In 2015, the Women’s event, named after Princess Alexandra who opened the Derwent Dam in 1967, has been expanded to take in both days after being a one day event in 2014.

VeloUK spoke to a hard working volunteer organiser, Mike Hodgson, who in between trying to meet the difficult demands of British Cycling, has spent a lot of time talking to teams about the proposed changes. The result is two hard days of racing around the Derwent Reservoir which will provide worthy winners.

The Blanchland circuit is epic! Here Tom Moses goes clear as the road races through the moors with the wind and cold.

The Womens
After being introduced in 2014, the Women’s event which was very well received by the riders, goes to two days and will start with a kermesse on Saturday morning.
“The race leave Blanchland towards the Reservoir and travel through Edmundbyers and turn left into the Reservoir (the normal route). The race then progresses along the dam wall and at the T intersection at the bottom of the hill (before the bridge)after the cattle grid, the race will go right (back towards Edmundbyers).

The race will continue along this road and at the entrance to the Reservoir, the race will turn right and enter the grounds. That circuit is just under two miles and they will do ten laps of that on the Saturday morning.” This VeloUK understands will be a closed road.

“On the Sunday morning, the Women will do four laps of the traditional rolling circuit of the Reservoir”. The race was won in 2014 by Nicola Juniper who rides for Giordana-Triton in 2015.

The Mens
Another of the changes is the ‘epic’ stage course normally used for the men’s race on the Saturday with a lot of climbing through wind swept moors has been shortened and added to laps of the traditional circuit on the Sunday. This means the race will begin with laps of the traditional circuit on the Saturday. The organiser even hinted he’d like to start the event on a Friday evening in the future years with a Kermesse!

Mike explained that the men’s Tour will start in 2015 on Saturday afternoon at 1pm. “They are going to do eight laps of the normal Reservoir circuit. So instead of doing that on the Sunday, they’ll do that stage on the Sunday”.

“Then, on the Sunday, after the women have finished, they will do two laps of the Reservoir circuit to get warmed up and then at the feed station, they will turn right and join the Blanchland circuit (through the moors and climbs) (used on the Sunday for the last few years) and do three laps of that and then head back to the Reservoir before doing either one or two more laps of the Reservoir circuit”.
