Winner in 2014, Ian ‘Superman’ Wilkinson will wear number 1 at the famous cycling event.

I doubt there is a Regional C+ handicap event on the calendar that comes close to matching the entry that this race on Merseyside gets each year and yet again, there’s a bumper one for 2015.

The 81 kilometre (50 mile) race around the old motor racing circuit at Aintree, feet from the jumps used in the Grand National, will see three of the top British UCI teams compete including Raleigh, JLT-Condor and One Pro Cycling.

As well as Eddie Soens, this event also stands as a memorial to Ken Matthews, former president of Kirkby Cycling Club and organiser of the race for 40 years before Carl Lawrenson took over the reins. Last year’s winner Ian Wilkinson returns with eleven of his teammates from Raleigh including newly crowned World Champion Madison Morgan Kneisky. It is the third World title for the French rider.

Also in the Raleigh team are the new signings such as Poland’s Karol Domagalski who is said to be every bit as strong and powerful as resident Polish rider Marcin Bialoblicki. Calvin Beneke from South Africa and Matti Manninen from Finland are also part of the squad on their new look Raleigh Militis bikes along with Evan Oliphant who became a father only weeks ago.

Raleigh have no less than 12 riders on the start list. Above is the team in action in 2014 which led to a victory by Ian Wilkinson.

Four time winner Tony Gibb is on the entry list as well looking to steal the victory from under the noses of the pro teams which includes the second placed rider from 2014 looking to make amends, Graham Briggs.

The Yorkshire rider is one of eight entries from John Herety’s team in the scratch group although one of those, Felix English is doubtful after recent surgery on a broken wrist.

New kids on the block with victories already to their name, One Pro, have six entries including winner of the Severn Bridge Road Race last weekend, George Harper and backed up by Clayton Velo Spring Classic winner, another handicap race, Peter Williams, a former winner of the Sprints jersey in the Tour of Britain. Winner of no less than three rounds of the Pearl Izumi Tour Series, Jon Mould is another high profile entry from that team.

Tommy Bustard is entered again for Giordana.

Elite mens team SportGrub KUOTA have a strong team in the race as well with Will Bjergfelt who rode so well at Severn Bridge along with former professional Dan Fleeman. All these riders, part of 46 entries in the scratch group will have to work hard to close down the three minutes they are giving away to the front group before they think about the win.

In the front groups ahead are the lower category riders but talented riders nonetheless. In the first group ahead of the scratch one for Elites/1st cats for example is second cat Luke Grivell Mellor and Mike Cuming who dominated the Ryedale Prem last year with Richard Handley. Nathan Edmondson, who rode the Tour of Britain for Giordana is another in that second group.

In the third group is another development rider signed by John Herety, Joe Moses but the ‘big’ name is Hannah Barnes who rides for an American team these days. The multi national champion who rode so well in the Friend’s Life Women’s Tour last year will be in among the third cats and if they reach the Juniors out front and hold off the scratch group, could Hannah be the first woman since Julie Hill (now Terry Dolan’s better half LoL) to win the race? Fingers crossed we see her at the race!

The event is the first of two big early season classics next weekend. The other being the Jock Wadley Memorial where NFTO will be giving many of their star riders their first race in Britain for 2015. Preview here:
