The University of Stirling’s beautiful setting offered the perfect backdrop for the second year of Crit on the Campus. With over 350 entries spread over eight races, including the largest number of entrants ever for a women’s race in Scotland outside the 2013 British Championships and the Commonwealth Games, the races promised to test the riders and offer an exciting spectacle for the crowd.

After a series of youth and beginner races in the morning, the women’s race took centre stage in the afternoon with a quality field hoping to take top honours, including Charlene Joiner (Team WNT), Kayleigh Brogan (Aprire Bicycles/HSS Hire), and current British National Crit Champion Eileen Roe (Wiggle Honda). A high pace was set from the start with Brogan doing much of the work at the head of the race slowly whittling the large field to a smaller group of 15 by mid-race.

The group continued to put distance into chasers whilst losing more riders until the bell lap where only 10 remained. Joiner lead the field into the final bend with Roe closely following on a different line, slipping her wheel and falling, taking Louise Borthwick (Project 51) and Brogan with her. Joiner powered up the finish line to take the win, her first in Scotland for her new team, closely followed by Flora Gillies (Project 51) and Ellen McDermott (Team WattCycle). Claire Martin (Team 22) and 4th cat Lorna Ferguson (Glasgow Green a Cycling Club) rounded out the top 5.

The men’s race had a lot to live up to if it was going to equal the excitement of the women’s race. A stacked field of the best Scottish talent lined up with Evan Oliphant (Team Raleigh GAC), David Lines (Starley Primal) and in form Peter Murdoch (Neon-Velo Cycling Team) leading the charge from the gun. The pivotal move came after 30 minutes of racing when a group containing Oliphant, Murdoch, Steven Lawley (Neon-Velo Cycling Team) and Fraser Martin (Spokes Racing Team) jumped clear of the pack.

The quartet built up a 20 second lead that the chasing pack could not close down, despite massive pulls by Lines and vet Arthur Doyle (Dooleys Cycles). Oliphant lead the break into the final corner, followed by Murdoch, Martin and Lawley. Oliphant sprinted for the line just holding Murdoch at bay, with 18 year old Martin taking the final podium step. The chasing bunch had shattered on the final lap, with Doyle finishing in fifth place, 16 seconds in arrears.
