Women’s Tour of Reservoir Stage 2

WomensPodium

Despite coming under tremendous pressure from last year’s winner Nicola Juniper, Dani King held strong and won the Women’s Tour of Reservoir. Last year’s silver medallist in the British Road Race championship for women, King, wearing a yellow jersey, chased all day and was rewarded with the overall victory.

The day started with Nicola Juniper and Joanna Rowsell going clear with Juniper looking to make up ground after a untimely puncture the day before saw her losing four minutes. The move saw the peloton in bits, with groups of two and three all over the place, and Dani King right at the front of it all chasing the break.

Lap 1 and bar a few stragglers, the race was all together and the weather quite okay, cold but dry.

Last year’s defending champion Juniper admitted that the World champion on the track Rowsell, was super strong though and knew the stage victory was going to be a tough ask. Of the two riders, Juniper was the closest to King on GC and at one stage, their lead was three minutes and the stress on King was visible as she came through with a lap to go looking for a time gap.

It wasn’t only the fast pace of the race though that was taking its toll. Race radio saw many calls coming over asking for a car to pick up a rider suffering hypotherma and on the podium, the attire was not just team kit but warming blankets as everyone in the race suffered with the freezing temperatures.

00_Res_WOmen_St2_02

Nicola Juniper and Joanna Rowsell lead the race and causing panic behind.

There were also crashes and one for Katie Archibald where she explained one minute she was descending and another on the deck, saw her lose her second place on the GC. Her teammate though Joanna Rowsell gave the team plenty to cheer as she attacked Juniper late on and rode solo into the finish area, arm aloft, to take a victory the morning after her brother Erick had done the very same thing.
Round two of the series, the popular Cheshire Classic is on the 26 April and sees another stellar field entered, where Archibald particularly will be determined to improve her position in the series overall by retaining the title she so impressively won in 2014.

MEN’S TOUR OF THE RESERVOIR
(Thanks to Adrian Elwood for the ride on the big Triumph!)

Report:

Marcin Bialoblocki (One Pro) won stage two of the Tour of the Reservoir in Northumberland on Sunday after the course for the stage was changed due to snow/ice and also shortened.

Despite this, the race was a great success for Madison Genesis who despite coming under fire from both One Pro, JLT Condor and NFTO, kept their GC leader at the front of the race and proved why many have said Roger Hammond’s team is the strongest in the UK.

2015_Tour_of_Res_MEN_START

The riders left Blanchland in freezing conditions and it was soon snowing as NFTO went on the attack on the first climb after a flurry of moves after the flag had dropped, had not got anywhere. It was Ian Bibby (NFTO) who started the move and NFTO had at least five riders in the move along with Steve Lampier (Raleigh), Mark McNally and Erick Rowsell (Madison Genesis) and others.

There was no panic from Madison Genesis though, who calmly organised the chase while NFTO drove the break along to see what damage could be done. With lots of fresh legs in the race, relatively fresh anyway after a tough day 1, the break started to come back and as it did, Ian Bibby (NFTO) and Tom Baylis went clear.

00_Reservoir_Mens_Report_004

A lap later, four riders bridged across; Tom Scully (Madison Genesis), James Lowsley-Williams (NFTO), George Harper and Luke Grivell-Mellor. The seven leaders, with Scully sitting in as his team chased behind, opened up a gap but the chase behind was so strong, it never got out of control for Madison Genesis.

An attack out of the break saw the group split as Bibby and Baylis carried on the move with Scully keeping an eye on them. They stayed out front until a lap to go when Pete Williams made the first of three or four move moves. Ireland’s Eddie Dunbar (NFTO), Richard Handley, James Gullen and Josh Hunt also had a go at going clear.

Nothing though was going to escape the clutches of Madison Genesis and whilst their man Erick Rowsell just failed to win the stage, second to Marcin Bialoblocki, the team did secure the big prize which was the overall victory yet again after Alex Peters last year.

00_Reservoir_Mens_Report_017

The final overall, Steve Lampier (Raleigh), Erick Rowsell (Madison Genesis) and Andy Tennant.

In second overall though was Steve Lampier (Raleigh) (left above) who despite not having mountains to strut his stuff on, still finished third on the stage (second on stage 1) and ended the race second overall.

Of all the riders so far, it’s Lampier who has shown the best form over the two national series events so far and he now leads the season long competition.

Next stop, the CiCLe Classic!

POST RACE REACTIONS

Madison_ErickRowsell

Erick Rowsell (Madison Genesis) The overall winner said after the podium presentation, “I had a bit of a point to prove coming here after pulling out of Normandy, so to come here and take the stage win yesterday and overall today, is fantastic. I don’t think I have been part of a team that put in a performance like that before.”

“I am so proud of everyone. They rode so hard for me and every time one or two of them got dropped, they came back and rode on the front again and it so I can’t thank them enough. If I did not have that team, then it would have been a tough race for me.”

Steve Lampier (2nd on GC, third on stage) : The Raleigh-GAC rider said it was a horrible day in the conditions. “There was a snow blizzard at one point so it was a bit epic, a bit grim”. Asked if the stage being shortened and the course changed reduced his options, Steve replied “Big time. Because Madison are so strong with strength in depth, they were able to control it and in a shorter race, we couldn’t take it to them as much as we wanted to.”

“Fair play to Erick and Madison for their victory, but godamit, second again! Leading the series is quite nice though as I haven’t worn a leader’s jersey for a long while! The form is building nicely. I’m going to have a little break now and freshen up with training and then the CiCLE Classic and Tour of Yorkshire and everything is going the right way so I’m quite happy with that!”

Ian Bibby (NFTO) who was in the big break of the day “Because the stage had been shortened, I felt it was going to be hard for teams to control it so we went out to attack from the word go and make it as hard as possible. So on the first climb, I hit it really hard and Eddie came with us and there was a group of us off the front then.”

00_Reservoir_Mens_Report_011

“Erick was there, Macca two but unfortunately it came back and as it was, I went again on my own and One Pro came across and then a lap later, Hank came across and we were all riding. And then there was an attack by One Pro and Scud wouldn’t ride which was fair enough and so there was only two of us (along with Tom Scully) and we held out until the last lap.”

“The first two laps, it wasn’t as windy as yesterday but it was proper snowing and it got quite cold and after a few laps, my hands had gone but luckily it warmed up and the last few laps were okay. There were times during the first few laps you couldn’t see 50 feet up the road.”

00_Reservoir_Mens_Report_009

James Lowsley Williams (NFTO): Part of a group of four that crossed to the two leaders, James explained how the move came about. “One Pro were looking to attack it and I knew George (Harper) wanted to get up the road because he was not too far down on GC.”

“I made sure I was near the front and when George went on the climb before the old feed zone (Carricks Corner), I went with Luke Grivell Mellor as well and we worked hard to get across to Bibs. It was another long day out for me but it’s all good training ahead of Yorkshire. I am definitely starting to find my feet now and I am looking to get better and better with racing”.

Dave Povall (NFTO DS) “It was good to have the colours out front today. The win was going to be a big ask on GC once there was a Madison rider there but Bibby has good legs and it was good for him and the others to get that racing in ahead of the Tour of Yorkshire”.

“We were looking forward to the second day and knew the weather was going to change but we didn’t anticipate how severe that Sunday forecast was and did materialise. I think the right decision was made to not use the big circuit because the risks far out weighed the reward with the ice and snow on the descent.”

“It would have been the perfect stage for us had it not been changed and we’d have come out of it with more of a result. Once we knew what the stage was going to be, and we knew we could not action our intentions from the original strategy we came here with, we had to think out of the box. The fact it was six laps, played into the hands of Madison Genesis but they still had to defend that lead and they went about it in a very professional manner”.

“The race showed how good the UK scene is now and how things have moved on when you see teams race in that manner. Today was a fair display of our strength. We did not want to sit in and follow Madison Genesis all day, we wanted to animate the race and we did that.”

“James (Lowsley Williams) is lacking a little top end and some endurance and to be down the road two days in a row, he suffered on the last lap. It should be a good confidence boost for him to be those breaks. He is young enough to develop into a cracking rider and is continuing to develop after riding a cracking RideLondon last year and Tour of Britain.”

“The performance of James shows this team is more than about Bibby, Von Hoff and Dunbar. We have that strength in depth and can animate races which we’ll continue to do.”

A small group escaped with the likes of Pete Williams, Evan Oliphant (Raleigh) and Richard Handley but the move never stuck.

Then Ian Bibby (NFTO) went on the attack and another group went clear with five or more of NFTO in it. It was said overall winner Erick Rowsell, the hardest part of the race as Madison Genesis showed their strength in bringing the group back.
