Report – Mid Shropshire Wheelers Circuit Races

Mid Shropshire Wheelers National Time Trial Champions take the senior honours at Shrewsbury Sports Village whilst Solihull CC’s Jack Rootkin-Gray gave the spectators something to cheer about but was denied on the line after a 6 lap solo breakaway.

The windy weather didn’t deter riders from travelling to Shrewsbury Sports Village for round 3 of the Mid Shropshire Wheelers popular circuit races and numbers were well up on the wet and windy round 2.

Regular Shrewsbury under 10 competitor Joshua Jackson from Lyme RC took the first honours of the day in a combined under 8 and under 10s boys race while a newcomer from Featherstone RC, Noah Scott-Wright took the under 8s win. Another regular competitor Bethany Bennett of Towy Riders was a worthy winner of the under 10 girls from North Devon Road Club, Dotty Baldaro in second and promoting clubs Rebecca Woodvine decided against the clubs GoSkyRideSocial ride to place 3rd. In the under 8 girls it was another North Devon Baldaro, sister Betsy who took the victory from Redditch RPCC Lauren Oldfield.

Familiar names filled the top spots in the Boys and Girls under 12s with Lichfield CCC Ben Askey and Mid Shropshire Wheelers Rhiannon Tansley taking deserved wins but it was the under 14s race which had the small but vocal group of spectators and parents excited. The strong wind was a deterrent but with 6 laps to go Jack Rootkin – Gray of Solihull CC decided he’d had enough of the negative racing and put in a blistering attack from the bottom hairpin.

6 laps solo seemed an impossible feat but this lad is made of strong stuff and he stuck to the task in hand, looking stylish throughout. Even the commissaire thought he’d got enough in hand of fast approaching bunch as he approached 100 metres but a sneak look behind with 50 metres to go was perhaps his undoing as he was caught on the line by National Cyclo Cross Champion, Lewis Askey of Lichfield CC. The gap according to the chip timing system 0.088 of a second!

Adversaries of old, Mid Shropshire Wheelers Devon Round and Will Lewis of Wolverhampton Wheelers rode a 2 up time trial for the majority of the under 16 boys race, sharing the work evenly until the last lap when there was a drag race sprint to the line, narrowly taken by the Wolverhampton rider.

Josef Feiven of Solihull showed a great turn of speed to take the bunch sprint for 3rd. In the under 16 girls, eyes were on local Esme Niblett of Mid Shropshire Wheelers to hopefully take honours but taking on a good group of girls in the dash to the line, she had to give best to Welsh riders, Sophie Williams and Megan James with Welwyn CC’s Kathryn Anderson 3rd and finished a close 4th.

In the Women’s race there was a much better turnout from the previous Women’s race and means the club will continue to offer Women’s only racing in it’s promotions despite pressure to drop it in favour of a 4th category Male race.

Kelly Murphy returned for more circuit race action after her 2nd place in the previous race at the Shrewsbury Sports Village and was strong throughout, breaking clear solo at one point but the danger was noted and she was slowly brought back by a group of 6 riders that formed as they shed the rest of the bunch during the chase.

7 riders stayed together and National Junior Time Trial Champion Hetty Niblett of Mid Shropshire Wheelers showed with great effect why you shouldn’t be afraid to open up the sprint if there’s a tailwind finish. Beaming as she crossed the line almost .5 second clear of Cardiff Jif CC Sophie Williams and M&D’s Alice Law.

Hetty

The Men’s 3/4 Category race was oversubscribed with a week to go of the online entry system operated by British Cycling and it was speculative on the day entrants George Evans and Josh Housley who lit up the race and provided the ride of the day. Mid Shropshire Wheeler Evans, the current GHS 10 Mile Time Trial Joint Champion was denied a place in the Junior National Series , Tour of the Mendips and chanced an on the day entry here and on this showing should never be excluded from a National Series race again.

Housley of Beeston RC left the start line like a scalded cat and was quickly joined by Evans, despite being told before the race to be patient, West Mids Police CC’s Stephen Lynn and Mark McCann of Walsall’s Born to Bike. These 4 combined well together and despite holding a very tenuous lead in the first few laps were not troubled by the bunch.

What they were troubled with was the relentless pace of the Mid Shropshire Wheeler, as one by one they were unable to hold his wheel. On lap 17 of the 32 lap race Josh Housley finally gave best to the young George Evans and officials were left wondering if a 25 second gap would be enough to stay clear for a solo rider.

The gap stayed constant with only the customary last lap surge of the bunch making any headway into the lead of Evans. Ethan Davies of Wolverhampton Wheelers took the bunch sprint from Ed Hopper with Josh Housley recovering in the bunch to take a well deserved 5th place.
