Report & Results – South Region RR Champs

Sunday 17th May | by Graham Robins

Ben Stockdale (SportGrub KUOTA Cycling Team), Kimberley Ashton (Casp Racing) and Jack Billyard (RP Racing Team) were the winners at this weekend South Region Road Race Championships on a truly challenging course worthy of the event.

The event was supported by Portsmouth North End CC and Fareham Wheelers CC on the Owslebury course to the North of Southampton. The juniors and women completed seven laps while the senior men did a gruelling eleven laps.

The morning saw the women and juniors race for seven laps but they had to compete in the warm sun which caused problems for some as water was needed even more. The juniors completed the first lap together before Harvey Morcombe (Fareham Wheelers) attacked the climb away from Owslebury but his lead was short lived and he was pulled back to the bunch.

The next rider to attack was Matthew Downie (DHC Racing) and he managed to slip the bunch and build a lead of 30secs which he held for a full lap before he was joined first by Jack Billyard and then Ashley Hutchinson (VC St Raphael). With there being three leaders now they worked well together and soon their gap built over one minute and then even further out to over two minutes at the bell. The three leaders approached the finish line and Billyard had too much for the other two escapees and crossed the line just ahead of Hutchinson with original leader Downie perhaps paying for his early efforts taking third.

WOMEN’S RACE
The women’s race spent the first couple of laps together before a small group built on the front when Rebecca Raybould (Poole Wheelers), Kimberley Ashton, Corinne Clark (Ride 24/7) and Gillian Taylor (Fusion RT Gearclub Bike Science) and these riders began to build a lead which at one point was over four minutes before Taylor was eventually dropped.

Ashton soon showed her strength and left the other two to ride away on the final lap. Clark then pulled away from Raybould finishing 3mins 26secs down on Ashton but 36secs ahead of Raybould.

SENIOR MEN
The seniors rolled away through the village of Owslebury before turning right and directly onto the course and a climb. The opening lap saw the peloton sticking together as they all had a good look at the course. The bunch was very active and also very attentive as each attack was quickly brought back.

On the second complete lap we saw our first proper attack as four riders pulled a gap of 100meters but their gap was always manageable by the bunch. It wasn’t until lap four a group of five riders managed to build up a good lead. The leaders were James Phillips (Dream Cycling Race Team), Mitchell Webber (Pedal Heaven RT), Phillip Peters (Danny Shane-Storck Racing), Colin Parry (Ride 24/7) and William Bjergfelt (SportGrub KUOTA Cycling Team) and with Daniel Halksworth (Velo Sport Jersey) just off the leaders this group started to ease away and over the next couple of laps they built a lead of 34secs which soon went out to one minute.

At half race distance Craig Wallduck (Dream Cycling Race Team) and Tristan Robbins (Madison Genesis) managed to bridge the gap to leave us now with a strong leading group of eight. Over the next couple of laps Stockdale and Robbins managed to drop the other six and build a lead of 35secs over Phillips, with Webber and Parry at one minute Chris Spence (Casp Racing) at 1min 30secs and the remainder of the bunch now over two minutes further back.

As the finish became closer Stockdale and Robbins had 40secs lead over Phillips and Bjergfelt with Webber and Parry now locked together back at one minute.

The final lap saw Stockdale attack Robbins as they were three quarters of the way around the course to solo to a decisive win of 1mins 02secs, Bjergfelt made it a good race for the SportGrub team taking the final podium position after failing to hold off the younger Robbins on the line.
