A feast of road racing at the 2015 British Masters RR Championships near Milton Keynes sees entries closed with a total of over 400 riders

News – 2015 British Masters RR Championships

Saturday 30th And Sunday 31st May

Over 400 of the top UK Masters racers will be competing in eight races over the weekend of 30 and 31 May based on a 10.7 mile circuit on the western edge of Milton Keynes, with Race HQ at Longueville Hall, Newton Longville.

Competitors will be coming from all over the UK, and some even some Germany, Spain and the USA. Masters racing is open to all Male or Female riders aged over 30 and who hold a British Cycling racing licence, and the Championships are decided by five year age groups. Race distance varies from 54 to 87 miles depending on age group.

Racing will take place in four sessions (morning and afternoon on both days) with two races running concurrently approximately 5-10 minutes apart. Racing starts on Saturday at 0900 for all Women, and at 1315 for Male (45-49) and (50-54) age groups. On Sunday racing starts a little earlier at 0830 for Male (55-59) and (60+) age groups and at 1245 for Male (30-39) and 40-44) age groups. The race finish is on Whaddon Road, 1 mile from Newton Longville.

Amongst the field are the likes of Andy Eagers (2nd in the 2014 World Masters), Tony Gibb (former UK No. 1 ranked rider, 14 times National Champion, World Championship Silver medallist, Commonwealth Bronze and 9 times World Cup medallist), Chris McNamara (showing exceptional early form and a returning Champion), Jamie Pine, Henry Furniss (ex Elite category and co-founder of Windymilla) and Andrew Critchlow (read about the “Come back Dad” in the Daily Telegraph).

Returning Champions like Malcolm Smith (co-founder of the UCI World Tour event – The Tour of Cambridge), David Creegan (showing great form as first home in the recent Tour of Majorca), Nicola Juniper, Joey Williams, Alan Kemp (multiple National Champion) and Geoff Wiles (ex-British Professional Road Champion). Local top riders include Roy Chamberlain (still an “Elite” at 50) and Ashley Cox. An interesting entry is internationally renowned sports journalist William Fotheringham.

A significant step forward in managing such events safely and effectively will be the deployment of British Cycling trained Accredited Marshals who, through the trained use in how to use “lollipop” style stop/go signs, have the power to stop traffic for short periods to facilitate the safe passing (for everyone) of a race peloton and its convoy. This is an important development in sustaining cycle road racing in the UK. It is also the way forward for any similar event taking place on the open roads.

The rise in numbers taking part in Masters (or Veterans) racing is a reflection of the huge growth in cycling generally in the past few years.
