News: £100 Prize at Halesowen GP

The flagship race at the Halesowen GP on July 12, the Billy Jones Memorial 10-miler, will carry a £100 cash prize to mark the formal reopening of the West Midlands velodrome after extensive renovation work. Entries are being taken now for the GP meeting which also includes a round of the women’s omnium series, while the Billy Jones is the sixth round of the British Cycling National Hard Track series.

The Halesowen track in Manor Abbey Way – conveniently near to junction three of the M5 – reopened this week for training and competition after a six-week break in which the trackside fencing was completely renewed, a completely refurbished set of lights was put in to enable greater use of the track in the evenings, and repairs to the track surface were carried out. The work was part-funded by British Cycling.

“We would like to thank British Cycling for their help with the recent work,” said the club chair Sara Crumpton. “With the renovation last year of the changing rooms this makes us a truly national standard venue.” The reopening of the Halesowen track means the resumption of the ever-popular Friday Night Track League, now up and running again with some 60 riders already registered.

The formal reopening is set for the Grand Prix on July 12, for which a club member has put up a £100 cash prize for the winner of the main event, won on its last running in 2013 by Northern Ireland’s John McLelland. The 10-mile scratch is set to be the highlight of a full programme of racing which includes a full range of other endurance events.
