Tour de France – Stage 4

Stage 1 Report |  Stage 2 Report  | Stage 3 Report |

After all the hype, stage 4 of the Tour de France lived up to it and more with an explosive trip to hell and back which was a delight to watch but did little to change the GC battle.

After missing out on the yellow jersey for three days in a row by fractions of a second, Tony Martin (Etixx-Quick Step) made it to Cambrai after breaking away solo with 3.1km to go. Remarkably he did it on a teammate’s bike after needing a bike change late in the race and having his team pace him back. “Taking the yellow jersey after all the bad luck I’ve in the last three days, and also today with the flat tyre towards the end, it’s a super nice story and it makes me super happy”.

“Matteo Trentin gave me his bike straight away after I punctured, then I had to be focus because it wasn’t my bike, I had some difficulties to brake and I had lost a lot of energy in the chase”.

“Michal Golas did a great job bringing me back to the front group. This morning Tom Boonen gave me a call to talk about the cobblestones and Eddy Merckx motivated me on the start line but I’m definitely surprised to win this stage and take the yellow jersey, especially after the puncture”.

“Everybody in the group thought I was at the limit and I was! Nobody expected such an early attack but with 4km to go, all riders were on their knees. It was the right moment for me to attack”.

“I found some extra power. I came here for training for two days, so I knew that I had a chance if I could make it to the last kilometre, then it was more technical”.

“My goal was the last corner. My emotions of the past four days have been a roller-coaster. I’ve missed the yellow jersey by seconds. My goal was to get it on the first day. I was super upset that I didn’t. The pressure was getting higher every day”.

“I really wanted the yellow jersey for myself and for the team. Physically, yesterday was the hardest with the climb at the end and the heat. I’m more of a rider for the classics than a climber. It wasn’t a stage for me yesterday but today’s race suited me much more”.

“There are a few hard finales but normally, I should be able to stay at the front and we’re also one of the favorites for the team time trial. I’m pretty sure I have a fair chance to remain in the lead until the Pyrenees”.

It was his fifth stage victory at the Tour de France and he moved into the lead for the first time with 12 seconds lead over Chris Froome who was happy for the yellow jersey to go onto a rider who is not a threat for the overall in Paris.

The Race

A peloton of 191 riders started stage 4 from Seraing to Cambrai flagged off by Philippe, King of the Belgians. As a consequence of the crashes the day before, former yellow jersey wearer Fabian Cancellara (Trek), Daryl Impey (Orica-GreenEdge) and Andreas Schillinger (Bora-Argon 18) were non starters.

Lieuwe Westra (Astana), Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal), Perrig Quémeneur (Europcar) and Frédéric Brun (Bretagne-Séché Environnement) rode away from the gun at the initiative of the Belgian rider who was willing to showcase his team’s colours on home soil.

The quartet got a maximum lead of 9.10 at km 37, after which De Gendt crested the only categorized climb of the day in first position atop Namur’s citadel. As the race approached the first cobbled sector, the fight for positioning in the peloton saw the break’s lead crumble to 1min 25.

Team Sky was the most active team at the service of race leader Chris Froome. After the cobbled section, Alberto Contador, Nairo Quintana and Rigoberto Uran changed bikes as the bunch slowed down and the advantage of the breakaway went up again.

It was 3.55 at the feed zone in Binche but as the race was being shaken up again ahead of the final six sectors, the break’s lead disappeared and it was all together with 40km to go between the second and the third cobbled section.

Over the cobbles there was plenty of action and thankfully most of it was racing action and not crashes. That said, Alex Dowsett was delayed by a crash as was Dan Martin. In the GC lead group, which was only 40 or so strong, Vincenzo Nibali was very active indeed and Chris Froome had a moment where, had he not been able to skilfully ride the edge of a gutter, his race could have been well and truly over.

Nibali clashes with Bouhanni on the cobbles

He held it up through and spent the cobbled section, ungainly looking but effective in keeping pace with the front runners including Nibali who blew his doors off with his final move. The Astana rider though managed to hold onto a small group that opened up a gap on Contador and Quintana.
Geraint Thomas and Froome wanted to make the most of it but had little help and the split front group came back together.

Thibaut Pinot (FDJ) had a mechanical in the second last section with 23km to go and the Frenchman was forced to stop twice, and show his displeasure with a little tantrum, clearly unhappy with his team car not being there to help him.

The 35-man front group however also included the sprinters (such as Cavendish and Sagan) with the exception of Alexander Kristoff and André Greipel and it was a battle between those wanting the stage and the GC contenders.

TonyMartinTdFStage4_06

One rider though, Martin (above on a teammates bike) wanted both the stage and the GC lead and attacked with 3km to go as everyone else looked ready for a sprint finish.

There was no reaction from Team Sky. Chris Froome was obviously happy to abandon the yellow jersey to the German. Giant-Alpecin led the chase but it was too late. The triple world champion for time trialing managed to stay away and cross the line three seconds ahead of his compatriot John Degenkolb.

Even without Marcel Kittel, it’s a dream beginning of the Tour de France for the German riders who have won two stages in four days and lead both the overall and the points classifications with Martin and Greipel.

Peter Sagan: “We expected a crazy stage and it was! It went well. Our goal was to keep Alberto Contador safe. It was hard but we have done a nice race. I saw Tony Martin attacking and I thought either someone goes after him directly or he goes to the finish. I couldn’t respond. I was finished after pulling for Alberto but it was ok. Job is done.”

Vincenzo Nibali: “We haven’t changed anything compared to last year, only the weather has changed. On the last slightly uphill pavé section, I’ve tried to break the group hoping that someone would get dropped. It was a very difficult race. At the end we were all the favorites together and we managed to handle the stress of such a specific stage”.

“I’ve received a great support from the team. But it was dry, so it was less dangerous than last year and it wasn’t possible to create difference because we were riding in only one direction. So the maximum effect of the accelerations at the front was to put the whole group in one lane. After those first few stages, I feel physically well. I have a deficit to recover and I’ll try every time there is an occasion”.

Chris Froome: The legs are feeling good. When it got over 200k, it was more about who had the legs and I was pretty happy with the feeling.” Froome admits he can’t remember the riding along the gutter moment “I had quite a few of those moments along the way. Riding the cobbles is hairy and sketchy and I think all the GC contenders will sleep better tonight.”

“A lot of the cobbled sections had a head wind on them so it was very difficult to stretch it out and make a difference so one or two of them, I thought I’ll sit in but at no time did I feel I was under pressure.”

“We have a long way to go and Tony is a great time trialist but he won’t be there once we hit the mountains so definitely happy to see it (yellow jumper) go to him. Hopefully my guys can have a rest and stay on the wheels a bit more than normal”.

A very much slimmed down peloton with most of the GC favourites in it

One that was not was Pinot who didn’t want a teammate’s bike and is now over 6 minutes down on GC.  “I had a mechanical and then it went full gas. When incidents pile up… It was the same in 2013 and it looks like it’s going to be the same again. It’s a shame,” said the third rider in the 2014 Tour. “I could have received assistance but who from ? Mathieu (Ladagnous), who is much taller than me ? It’s sure that when you have car number 13, you must expect to wait for your car a long time,” he added. “Now I will try to recover with time. I’m going to finish the Tour and try to prove that my talent is still there,” he said.
