British and Australian Champions  Headline Chepstow Circuit Race

The next ‘crit’ that will see the top teams from around the country line up to race is at Chepstow in Wales and the event will have a first with both the Australian (Steele Von Hoff) and British (Ian Bibby)  circuit race champions headlining the event for their team NFTO.

Steele won his title in Australia at the start of the year whilst Ian Bibby solo’d to victory in Yorkshire last Wednesday. With the event at Chepstow not a million miles from the service course for NFTO, the team will be well up for the race and showing off the champion’s colours in Wales, home to many of the team.

The race is the first of three in Monmouthshire this week with another crit in Abergavenny on Friday and then the big one, the Welsh Grand Prix in the national road race series for the Star Trophy.

Another man in form, Graham Briggs (JLT Condor), is wearing number 1 in the Chepstow Grand Prix and whilst Briggs, second in the crit champs is one of the favourites, so is One Pro Cycling pairing of George Atkins, 3rd in the Crit Champs and Jon Mould who has had four podiums in the series so far and has all but won it (the series). Pedal Heaven are looking for that first big win in the series and certainly gave the Crit Champs a big shake and if he’s riding, Matt Gibson of the GB academy is certainly a hot favourite based on previous form.

James Lowsley-Williams and Rhys Lloyd of NFTO are also in good form with Lloyd a winner at the weekend whilst Andrew Hawdon (Raleigh GAC) has already had a victory in the series and his team will have several options. As ever these days with the level of racing so open, the line-up is full of possible winners but the gut feeling is Graham Briggs will be the hungriest for it!

The race will take place in the historic market town of Chepstow with its tight twisting streets providing an extra level of challenge for the peloton. The lap begins on Bridge Street before a series of sharp turns brings riders onto Nelson Street.

The race continues on narrow streets to Lower Church Street before a left-hander leads to St Ann Street. A final left onto Bridge Street brings the race back to the start. Riders will race for one hour plus five laps, with the race beginning at 8:00pm.
