News – Good start for GB at Avenir
A classic stage race in its own right and now a career launch pad for young riders such as the Yates brothers who were winners in the event, the Tour de l’Avenir got underway on Saturday with a short up hill down dale prologue.

Former RST Racing rider, 19-year Cullaigh finished the hilly 3.5 kilometre test against the watch eleven seconds down on stage winner Anderson of Denmark.

Gabz Cullaigh said on twitter after “Really happy with 13th (14th after the result was revised) in today’s Prologue, nice steep climb in the 3.5km course to mix things up! Roll on tomorrow!”

The Yorkshire rider was a winner at the Stafford Kermesse this year and also won a stage in the Course de la Paix. Team Sky’s Alex Peters was 18th, prolific winner Chris Lawless 26th, Stevie Williams 65th, Mark Stewart 92nd and Jake Kelly 117th.

In a team with strong riders like Cullaigh, climbers Peters and Williams as well as sprinter Lawless, the GB squad will have options for the hilly first stage over 100 miles today (Sunday).
