News: Tao Geoghegan Hart

With one stage to go, Tao Geoghegan Hart leads the Young Rider classification at the USA Pro Challenge from fellow Brit Hugh Carthy. The final stage has a single mountain climb of four miles after 15 miles of the 68 mile stage and if the he can keep the 15 seconds he has over Carthy, it will be a big victory for the Londoner.

On stage 6 won by Roman Kreuziger (Tinkoff-Saxo), Geoghegan Hart finished in the peloton to stay sixth overall with just the final stage remaining. “We were riding beside the jersey all day long to make sure we stayed out of trouble and then towards the end we looked to bridge the gap and set something up for Logan,” team director Axel Merckx said.

“Although we didn’t quite close the gap, it’s all a learning curve – it’s all good. There’s no harm done, we just wanted to try it to see what we could get.” Should Geoghegan Hart hold the jersey to the finish in Denver, he will follow Joe Dombrowski and Clement Chevrier as the third Axeon rider to be crowned the USA Pro Challenge’s Best Young Rider.

But Merckx says there’s no secret formula to the success – just good form and a profile on which his riders have thrived. “I think it’s particularly the profile, and the riders we have had suit this sort of race,” he explained. “I can’t really say it’s for this or this reason. Typically we restart the season with Utah and when Colorado comes around we are refreshed, but also with some racing in our legs. It’s a good condition that we can benefit from once we’re here.”

“Tomorrow will be about getting over the mountain and then seeing what sort of sprint it is – the local circuit has a small climb in it but we’re expecting some sort of field sprint,” Merckx added.
