Report

The National Trophy went to Durham in the North East for round 3 of the cyclo-cross series and the weather turned wintery which is just what many riders wanted. The day dawned bright but the gusts of wind soon got up, causing havoc whilst the rain came and went all day.

Field

Win number 3 for Ian Field in this year’s series

Despite the rain the day before and on Sunday, the course remained full of sticky mud which had many riders changing bikes every half lap which kept the pit crews very busy for those lucky enough to have helpers ready to get muddy and wet cleaning bikes at breakneck speed.

In the Men’s race, Ian Field (Hargroves Cycles-Ridley) yet again started steady as Ben Sumner took off like a rocket and opened up a big lead. But past the cricket scoreboard, Ian ran as smoothly as a Swiss watch, making up lots of ground on the leader and was soon in front and opening up a gap.

Craig_Fletcher

Nick Craig leads David Fletcher approaching the Durhamberg on the final lap

Behind him, the battle for second was changing all the time. As Sumner dropped back a few places, David Fletcher and Nick Craig went wheel to wheel on the last lap until Fletcher managed to open a small gap and cross the line just ahead of the veteran legend in off road cycling. Ian Field has now won three from three in the series and currently, looks unbeatable whatever the course.

In the Women’s race, Amira Mellor was showing no signs of fatigue from her Under 23 race at the Europeans the day before in Holland and quickly opened up a gap at the head of the race. Beth Crumpton however was taking a liking to the slow going in the mud and on the final lap timed her pace perfectly to catch Mellor and take the win. Series leader Hannah Payton was third and holds on to her jersey.

Mellor

Crumpton

But Beth Crumpton came back to win the race from Mellor

In the Junior Men, a youngster who is super fast in the sprints on the road, Tom Pidcock, is also enjoying the ‘cross and after a super 8th in the Europeans, came back to England and won his race at Durham. Mark Donovan led early on as a select group formed but Pidcock slowly edged his way to the front and once there, opened a gap to win from his GB teammate Ben Turner and Donovan.

The Veterans saw Rob Jebb enjoy a course with so much running and he beat Darren Atkins to the line whilst in the Vet 50, Tim Gould and Phil Roach on his Raleigh RX had a close tussle for the win. Roach found sections he was better at and led for a lot of the race but Gould came back at him and the two swapped the lead time and time again.

A hold up in the pits for Roach saw Gould gain a few seconds and that was that and no matter how he tried, Roach was unable to close the gap as the legend that is Tim Gould won the race and took the series lead from Roach.
