Despite three KoM climbs in the final third of the race, stage 4 was decided with a bunch kick where Cavendish got his hands in the air whilst Wiggins still leads

Mark Cavendish Wins in Llanberis

Omega Pharma – Quick-Step rider, Mark Cavendish, won the bunch kick after 191 hilly kilometres for stage 4 of the Tour of Britain. After a break of 11 escaped after around three quarters of an hour of racing, the chase was dominated by Team Sky and it was a close call for the sprinters with the catch not being made until the final kilometre.

Cavendish had the services of Alessandro Petacchi for the final leadout and in the dash for the line, Cavendish overtook everyone within the final few hundred meters for the victory with no one able to come back at. Elia Viviani (Cannondale ProCycling Team) was 2nd, and Steele Von Hoff (Garmin-Sharp) was 3rd.

Quintana came up from the back to shake the hand of Bradley Wiggins during the neutralised section of the stage.

“Iljo did a great job for us today, we really didn’t have to work because he was in the breakaway,” Sport Director Brian Holm said. “We just followed and won the sprint with the British Champion Cavendish. Iljo went with the break after 30 or 40 kilometers into the stage and it looked like the peloton wouldn’t chase him back. Iljo had good legs today, so we thought he possibly had the stage when he attacked late. But they chased him down in the last kilometer or so.”

“We knew Cav had a fair chance for the sprint. Petacchi just delivered him perfectly. Cav was 10th in the TT yesterday so we knew he was in pretty good shape and riding well. But even then, our big focus for him from the start of Tour of Britain was really the last day in London. Otherwise there was no stress, no pressure. We gave our GC guys like Michal Golas, Julien Vermote and Martin Velits carte blanche until that day.”

The 11 man group was created when two groups merged after an hour of racing.

“Iljo said he was good today, so we gave him a chance and it still worked out for us in the final with a great sprint of Cavendish. We were still getting used to our new leadout formation in the first days, but today we found each other and won. So, this should be really good for the morale in the next stages leading into London.”

“I am really, really happy about my victory and the super job of the guys,” Cavendish said. “Fortunately we had the entire day with Iljo in the break, so we didn’t have to ride behind. The guys stayed with me the entire day. On the last climb, the short climb when Dan Martin attacked, I have to say I was at the limit — but the guys stayed with me and brought me back.”

“They showed a big commitment. That is why I did my best in the sprint. Even Petacchi, who was still suffering from the crash of a couple days ago, wanted to be there. He really led me out in the final. He put me in the best position for the sprint. Now we are looking forward to the next stages. We can play a role in the GC for the next two stages with Golas and Vermote, then there is the stage of Saturday and of course Sunday in London where I hope I can do something good.”

Bradley Wiggins Press Conference: “It was as tough as I thought it was going to be, with the tough weather and the wind. It always looks different on the tele, but the boys, to keep that gap down to 3:50 all the way, did an incredible job and then if we knew it was going to come back as easy as it did in the last 10, 15k, then perhaps we should have left it a bit more.”

“It’s best to play it safe, but we knew the run in as Dave’s [Sir David Brailsford] from here, so knew the last 10k was all downhill into the finish and the last climb wasn’t really too bad, it was just the last final kilometre.”

Speaking about coming under attack from Dan Martin’s Garmin team, Wiggins said “We expected them to really, with Dan [Martin] attacking and setting it up for Jack [Bauer] to give it a shot. It’s fortunate that we’ve got a little bit of a gap on Jack so we can let it go out a little bit and then reel him in, especially with the headwind in the final two k.”

“It was quite a strong headwind, so anyone out there on their own it would have been quite an effort to stay away.”

Alex Dowsett has a dig at the front during a period where nothing seemed to be going anywhere. 

Asked how he felt during stage 4, Brad says “I never look forward to the day after a time trial, the change of bike and stuff. But today I felt good. I’m glad it’s out of the way though and we’ve had another day back on the road bike. Tomorrow’s another day though, an important day.”

Wiggins also praised his teammates … “Ian’s [Stannard] going so well at the moment. We saw that once he started on the front with 15k to go he brought it back by a minute. So we wanted to keep Ian as long as possible and also keep his second place overall for another day. Bernie [Eisel] and Mathew [Hayman] rode pretty much all day today by themselves, then David Lopez and young Josh [Edmondson] took it up with about 50k to go.”

“For a first year professional, Josh has been brilliant all season. You only have to look at him on a bike. I don’t want to big him up too much, but potentially he could be a Tour de France winner in the next ten years. He’s got a lot of class about him and looks like an old school Spanish climber. He’s got a good style and a good head on him, he’s a good lad.”

After a fall into the grass, Peter Hawkins got up and back to the front to have a dig.

Looking ahead to a wet and cold stage 5, Wiggins said “Same tactics again really. I think the race will be decided on the two laps. I looked at this stage last week, so it’s going to be another tough day tomorrow, probably the toughest really because of that finish circuit. I don’t believe Haytor is a proper mountain finish as such so tomorrow’s going to be the really key climbing day as it were.”

“There was quite a difference the last two years going up there. The first year we only went up it once and there was a selection and then last year it was three guys off the front with JT [Jonathan Tiernan Locke] so it’s been the decisive stage and I expect it to be the same tomorrow.”
