News: Halesowen Friday Night Track League

Halesowen Friday Night Track league will be running this year from 10th May until 6th September

The season will conclude with a presentation evening for the league winners in the clubhouse on September 20. Last year’s league enjoyed increased rider numbers in spite of the uncertain weather, no doubt thanks to the “Olympic effect”, with the overall winners Tom Gregory in the A category and Harvey Jackson among the Bs.

Registration forms for the league are available through the following emails fntl@halesowencycling.net or secretary@halesowencycling.net. Email/postal registrations will be accepted up until May 3 – there is no need to send a cheque as payments will be accepted on the first evening.

Those who have never ridden a track league before then you will need accreditation, available through a special session being held at the Halesowen track on April 12 at 630pm. Riders with previous track league experience – indoor or outdoor – or with Manchester/Newport accreditation do not need to attend the session. Freewheelers will also need to be accredited if they have not ridden before, dates from the Halesowen website soon.

News: Dates for Revolution Series

Revolution Series has confirmed dates for all four rounds of the 2013-14 season, which are included on the UCI (International Cycling Union) calendar for the first time.

Dates

Round 1: 26th October – National Cycling Centre, Manchester
Round 2: 30th November – Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, Glasgow
Round 3: 4th January 2014 – National Cycling Centre, Manchester
Round 4: 25th January 2014 – Lee Valley VeloPark, London (TBC)

The 11th season of the world’s premier elite cycling league begins on Saturday, 26th October at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester. The series heads north for Round 2 and a second visit to the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow on 30th November following a successful debut event there last month.

Round 3 will return to Manchester, providing the New Year’s first dose of elite cycling action on 4th January. Round 4 takes place on 25th January: Talks are at an advanced stage with Lee Valley VeloPark to host this final round at the Olympic Velodrome.

Last season was the most successful yet for Revolution Series: all four rounds sold out months in advance as the appetite for elite track cycling continues to grow. Inclusion on the UCI calendar is a significant step forward for the series. It will attract even more of the world’s best track cyclists and make the competition all the more intense.

Riders will be fighting for UCI ranking points by performing strongly at the Revolution Series, which in turn will help them to qualify for World Championships and Olympic Games. FACE Partnership MD James Pope said: “Changes to UCI structure mean we can achieve Class 1 ranking next season without having to compromise the Revolution format. UCI points being on offer will add an extra dimension and enhance the calibre of the riders. We’re really excited our events will contribute to the Worlds, and ultimately the Olympics, qualification process.”

Track News: UCI Approve 2013 World Masters Championship dates

The World Masters Track Championships return to Manchester in October after the UCI approve the dates for the event

The UCI have now approved the following dates for the 2013 Championships.

– Saturday October 5th – Official Training Day
– Sunday October 6th to Saturday October 12th – Competition Days

Team Pursuits are Official Championships in 2013
The UCI have approved the inclusion of the Team Pursuit as an official championship event in 2013. There will be a Men’s 3,000 metres event for 4 riders with a combined age 180 years and a women’s open age event over 2,000 metres for teams of 3. Both events will be timed on the 3rd rider to finish.

Lots of international riders competing at the historic Good Friday meeting include Mr thighs, Robert Forstemann and many others from Germany, Italy, Belgium, Australia, New Zealand, Slovakia, France & Holland

The event will also see a strong British line up of course including former World Champion Andy Tennant (Madison Genesis) with Team Raleigh-GAC sending Scotland’s Evan Oliphant along with the ‘Scud’, New Zealand’s Tom Scully fresh from his triumph in the Tour of Normandie prologue and Aussie Sam Witmitz.

Peter Mitchell, winner of the Open Sprint for the last two years is hoping to make it three in a row but will face Mr Thighs, Robert Forstemann (above) among others.

Live commentary will be provided by David Harmon. Paralympic stars Jody Cundy and Jon-Allan Butterworth are also competing and newly crowned World Sprint and World Keirin Champion Becky James will be making a guest appearance, but will not be racing on this occasion.

The Triumph Thunderbird motorbikes will again take to the track. Two British riders, James Holland-Leader and Symon Lewis will compete against riders from Holland, Belgium, France and Germany in the seven man 40 laps Motor paced race.

There are five races for women this year; women’s specific are the Sprint, Keirin and Scratch, and women will take on the men in the 5 Mile and Devil.

The usual SCCU Good Friday favourite races include the White Hope Sprint for up and coming riders, the International Open Sprint with top riders from home and abroad and the Meeting will end with the now classic Golden Wheel 20 k scratch, which boasts a fantastic £1000 for the winner and a further £1000 for the runners up. Last year’s winner, Marcel Kalz from Germany is returning to defend his trophy against a 125 strong field.

Apart from the usual ‘cycle jumble’ stalls there will be Bike Bling and bike related stalls around the Velodrome, plus a Real Ale Bar, proper coffee and hot food outlets. Gates open at 9.30 for spectators. Preliminary races start at 10.30 and the Finals start at 1pm, all being well it should be done by 5.30.

News: Mildenhall Cycling Rally Generates Income for Local Area

The Mildenhall area in Suffolk is receiving up to a quarter of a millions pounds every year as a direct result of the Mildenhall Cycling Rally.

The figures have been revealed in a joint exercise between the organisers of the nationally acclaimed event, Mildenhall Cycling Club and Forest Heath District Council, whose officers carried out a face-to-face survey of visitors.

The survey showed that the average total spend was £104.75, whilst the average spend per person was £48.91. The actual amount spent per respondent ranged from nothing up to £2,100. Based on a conservative estimate of the total number of visitors of 5,000, this equates to £244,550!

One of the biggest recipients of this spending is local restaurants and hotels providing food in and around Mildenhall. “We recognised some years ago that there was a lack of eating places especially on Sunday evenings providing hot food. We approached local restaurants and hotels who were very receptive to the idea of staying opening on a Sunday to cater for the demand, which was very much welcomed by those attending the Rally”, explained Mark Burchett, Chairman of Mildenhall Cycling Club.

Local accommodation is also very sought after with all available B&B’s, guesthouses and hotels and as well as campsites full with people staying at the Rally. This is in addition to the 375 camping and caravan pitches that are filled every year at the event itself. Indeed there are some establishments that no longer need to advertise vacancies for the Bank-Holiday weekend, with those staying booking the same accommodation for the following year!

Mark Burchett said, “Although we recognised that the Rally could only be of benefit to Mildenhall and the surrounding areas, we did not realise the true extent of the economic impact that the Rally was having on the local community. We are extremely delighted though, that the whole community including local businesses are benefiting from the Rally, many of whom already do work with us to increase the mutual benefits”

Councillor James Waters, Leader of Forest Heath District Council, said: “These events are a very welcome boost to the local economy – not only through the income they generate at the time but also because people may choose to make return visits at other times of the year. The event attracts visitors from across the country who in turn may spread the word about what a great place Mildenhall is.”

The Mildenhall Cycling Rally attracts in excess of 5,000 people from across the UK who descend upon Mildenhall over the August Bank Holiday weekend. What the survey also confirmed was that quite a number return to the area at other times, so the resulting impact of the Rally is felt throughout the year.

From Mildenhall Cycling Club’s point of view, the survey confirmed that they have a winning formula, with 100% of those surveyed, saying they were enjoying the event. Of those only two didn’t feel the event was well organised.

It also confirmed something the organisers continually aim for, that the Rally is a fun event held in a safe environment for families. The youngest person surveyed was 17, whilst the oldest 84, who cited ‘cycling and view of the grass-track’, ‘atmosphere and ‘meeting with family & friends’, ‘family event’, ‘children’s activities’ and the ‘trade stands’ as the best thing about the event.

“The trade stands at the Rally’s two-day Trade Show provide everybody, but especially local people, the opportunity to stock up on all those cycling spares, as well as look at replacement wheels to complete bikes and all at discounted prices on their doorstep” explained Mark Burchett.

“We are very appreciative of the work carried out by staff from Forest Heath District Council in support of the Rally. This is not only in relation to the professionally carried out survey, but also throughout the year. I’m aware that a lot of local authorities get heavily criticised, but on behalf of the Club I can only praise Forest Heath for the support that they have and continue to give us” added Mark Burchett.

The Rally is a very popular event with top riders that have then gone on to win National and International recognition. Riders such as Olympic champions Victoria Pendleton CBE and Nicole Cooke OBE who honed their bike handling skills on Mildenhall’s grass-track have both recently retired and more recently Laura Trott was a regular at the Rally, until she shot to prominence 3 years ago at the Commonwealth Games before taking the London Olympics by storm in 2012.

Track Worlds Day 3: Australian Team News

Defending champion Glenn O’Shea (Australia) is in a strong position to be on the podium again when the Men’s Omnium is decided on day four of the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Minsk, Belarus.

At the halfway mark the 23 year old is sitting on seven points, three ahead of Olympic Champion Lasse Norman Hansen of Denmark with New Zealand’s Aaron Gate one point further back in third after the first three races of the six race event.

On day one O’Shea was a member of the victorious pursuit team but today it was all about his individual effort as he opened his omnium campaign with third place in the flying lap before winning the points race. In the elimination race he held on for third to give himself a handy buffer but O’Shea knows he has to maintain his form and focus tomorrow.

“He took a bit of a knock at the Olympic Games where he was in exactly the same position going into the second day and unfortunately it didn’t quite work out for him in the scratch race,” said Cycling Australia Endurance Coach Matthew Gilmore. “So we’ve done a lot of work and video analysis of that race in particular. He really wants to defend his title and bounce back from the Olympics.

“The highlight for me today was his points race, it’s an area that he’s had to work on in recent months,” said Gilmore. “It was one of his strongest points but since he’s been doing a lot of the team pursuit work that’s fallen away a little bit but today really pleasing to see he’s bounced back.”

But the plus side of the team pursuit training is an improvement in O’Shea’s timed events.

“It was a a really solid time (his flying lap) and it sets the tone for the rest of the competition,” explained Gilmore. “A good little confidence booster, he knows the form’s good, he brought that to the points race and then rode a very smart elimination race where he was able to put points into Hansen who is his main rival here.”

The second day of omnium will begin with the 4000m individual pursuit round.

“The IP (individual pursuit) will be very important for Glenn,” said Gilmore. “Lasse Hansen, it’s one of his stronger events, so (hopefully) we can limit our losses there.”

The scratch race comes next before the omnium wraps up wth the lung-busting kilometre time trial.

There were no medals for the Cyclones today but some promising results across the board.

Men’s Keirin

In the men’s keirin both Andrew Taylor and Scott Sunderland qualified for the final but missed the medals finishing fourth and fifth respectively. Keirin gold went to Oympic sprint champion Jason Kenny ahead of Germany’s Maximillian Levy with Matthijs Buchli of the Netehrlands third.

“It was good to get in the final but just unfortunate, I had good legs but from the get go I was stuck at the back which is always going to be difficult,” said 24 year old Sunderland who is racing in his sixth world championships. “I tried to make use of it but coming round (I was) getting hooks galore, people riding up, people riding down and really finding it hard to get through.”

After finding himself at fifth wheel in the keirin train behind the motor-pace derny Sunderland had to reassess his plan but couldn’t get a clean run through the field.

“I was hoping to slot in behind Max Levy (Germany) who was below me but I think Jason Kenny came underneath me and that made it difficult but like I said I had really good legs and I was feeling strong so it’s a shame.”

Meantime 27 year old Taylor from Dubbo in country New South Wales made an impression on debut to find himself in the medal race.

“Obviously I’m very happy to make the keirin final and finish fourth,” said Taylor. “But like Scotty said you always want to get higher.

“But first world titles to make the keirin final is a big step and with the likes of Max Levy, Scott Sunderland and Jason Kenny, it’s a top class field so very happy to make the final but a little bit disappointed.”

Australia’s third starter in the keirin was Matthew Glaezter who qualified for the consolation final and ended the competition ranked eleventh.

All three along with Mitchell Bullen will line up on day four in the men’s sprint.

Great Britain scored another gold medal when Simon Yates snatched the points race win in the final sprint across the line. Yates ended the 40 kilometres on 35 points pipping Spain’s Eloy Teruel Rovira by one point. Russian Kirill Sveshnikov claimed the bronze medal. Australian teenager Alexander Edmondson started strongly winning the first of the 16 sprints and grabbing points in the next two. But midway through the race the 19 year old team pursuit world champion couldn’t match the acceleration and slipped out of medal contention. He finished the race in eleventh place on 10 points.

In the women’s sprint Kaarle McCulloch qualified tenth fastest and after a second round loss fought her way back through the repechage into the quarter finals. But she then came up against top seed Rebecca James of Great Britian who was too quick on the day dispatching McCulloch in two straight heats.

Stephanie Morton clocked the sixth best 200m time in qualifying and won her way into a quarter final berth against last night’s 500m time trial winner Wai Sze Lee from Hong Kong. Lee continued her winning streak besting Morton, also in straight heats.

The consolation final (fifth to eighth) was won by China’s Jinjie Gong with Morton secured sixth overall and McCulloch seventh.

In the women’s 10km scratch race Melissa Hoskins went in hoping to better her silver medal of 2012 and was looking comfortable until ten laps from home when a succession of attacks in the last ten laps saw a trio break clear. Of the three it was Poland’s Katarzyna Pawlowska who grabbed the win ahead of Mexico’s Sofia Arreola Navarro with Russian Evgeniya Romanyuta sprinting out of the bunch on the final lap to claim third place.

Day four action will also feature two of our women’s team pursuit silver medallists with Ashlee Ankudinoff lining up in the points race while Annette Edmondson, who was second at last year’s worlds and claimed bronze at the Olympic Games in London, begins her quest for omnium glory in Minsk.

Australia, with two gold, two silver and two bronze medals, is now sitting second on the medal table behind Great Britain who have three gold, one silver and two bronze medals. Germany is ranked third with two gold, two silver and one bronze. Eight countries have won gold medals with seven of the 19 events yet to be decided.

Report: No Gold for GB on Day 1 of Worlds

After dominating the Olympics, there was only Silver & Bronze for GB on day 1 at the 2013 Track World Championships in Minsk

The best result came in the Team Pursuit where two of the Olympic record breaking foursome were joined by defending World Champion Andy Tennant and Academy rider Sam Harrison and together they took on the might of Australia.

After there being very little between them in the qualifying round, Australia stepped it up a gear in the final to win by a comfortable margin of four seconds plus. Australia led from start in the final clocking 1.03.278 for the first kilometre slightly faster than the Brits.

The GB foursome though fought back in the second kilometre being over half a second quicker but they paid the price for that as the Aussies came back in the third kilo, over a second quicker and extended that lead in the final kilometre to win from GB and take back the World title that these two countries have made their own over the last decade.

“Of course it is disappointing,” Clancy told BBC Sport. “In a gold/silver race you would rather win than lose. But British cycling is an Olympic programme and this is the first stage in an Olympic cycle. It is part of a long process with new faces in the team and we are in a better position than we were at the start of the last Olympic cycle.”

Bronze for Becky and Vicky
In the Women’s Team Sprint, with Victoria Pendleton retired and Jessica Varnish injured, it was up to a young duo to take on the world. In qualifying, they just shaded the Aussies by the narrowest of margins to make the bronze medal ride off against the Aussies.

Whilst Germany took the title, the young Brits yet again just managed to beat the Aussies by thousands of a second to win a surprise Bronze medal.

“It was so unexpected for both of us. I am just shocked,” said James to the BBC. “The changeover was a new thing we tried in training two weeks ago. We have had three sessions trying it out, so work to do on it but it worked out really well. This is probably the best form I have had.”

Fourth for Kian Emadi
Another of the Academy riders racing the Worlds, Kian Emadi missed out on a medal in the men’s 1km time trial by 0.306 seconds. Emadi, who will race as the third man in the sprint on Thursday, clocked one minute 1.756 seconds for his debut in the Kilo.

The headline act for the final Revolution of the 2012/13 season at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome will be Olypmpic Champion Ed Clancy

The Revolution series will make its debut at the new Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and the Scottish fans should be treated to a dramatic evening of racing with riders from around the World.

The endurance riders will be joined by the sprinters with an all-Star Scottish team riding: Craig MacLean, Callum Skinner and John Paul going head-to-head with a Rest of the World All-Star team. Other notable names in the rider line-up include Raymond and Michel Kreder, Dutch Madison champions, and Ross Edgar, continuing his transition to endurance for IG-Sigma Sport.

News: Mildenhall Rally in 2013

The Mildenhall Cycling Club will once again be promoting their annual cycling festival over the August Bank-Holiday weekend in 2013.

The Rally isn’t expected to see any major changes to the tried and tested line-up of events over the three days, confirmed one of the organisers Mark Burchett saying that “we are now working hard to make sure everything is confirmed in time for Easter when we plan to release the full details.”

The Rally has been a very popular event with top riders that have gone on to win National and International recognition. Riders such as Olympic champions Victoria Pendleton CBE and Nicole Cooke OBE who honed their bike handling skills on Mildenhall’s grass-track have both recently retired and more recently Laura Trott was a regular at the Rally, until she shot to prominence two-years ago at the Commonwealth Games before taking the London Olympics by storm in 2012.

The Rally will be held at its usual venue, at the Mildenhall College of Technology Sheldrick Way site from Saturday 24th – Monday 26th August 2013. Demand for the onsite camping and caravan spaces is always high, with all pitches last year allocated in advance of the event, so we would encourage everyone to watch out for when the bookings forms become available on the Rally website.” said Mark Burchett.

For those that prefer a bit more comfort, the Mildenhall Club will once again be providing a list of local B&B’s, guesthouses and hotels.

The grass-track will as ever form the centrepiece of the Rally, with a full supporting list of grass-track events everyday from 12 noon. The highlight of these will be the Women’s National 800m Championship. Other competitive events will include a Madison Cyclo-Cross and especially for the under 17’s there will be the ever-popular Children’s Duathlon and the under 16’s the Go-Ride Skilful Riding.

On the touring front, Suffolk DA (District Association) of the Cyclists Touring Club will be organising 50, 100, 200 & 300km Audax Rides on the Saturday. For those that want something more relaxing, Mildenhall Cycling Club will have their range of touring leaflets, offering a variety of scenery of varying distances.

There will be a two-day Trade Show (Sunday and Monday) open to the public. Other attractions will include the ever-popular Cycle Jumble and Quiz Nights. Every day there will be the Children’s Sports, while on the Sunday and Monday there will be the bouncy castle and face painter, both free of charge. Additionally there will be further free entertainment on the Sunday with a circus skills-workshop and on the Monday, Adam Strange with his Magic and Puppet Shows!

The Mildenhall Club plan to publish all the details at Easter on the event’s website at www.mildenhallrally.org.uk.

News: Medal for Welsh Team in World Cup

Team USN (Wales) secure their first medal in Mexico at UCI Track World Cup

The third round of the UCI Track World Cup has begun at Velodromo Bicentenario, Aguascalientes, with four members of Team USN in action on day one, taking their first medal of the competition.

Elinor Barker, Amy Roberts and Ciara Horne safely secured a bronze medal in the Women’s Team Pursuit. The Welsh trio qualified in third, with a time of 3:24.683 a personal best. They were just under a second quicker than rivals Italy, with Canada and Ukraine facing each other in the Gold final.

The Women’s Team Pursuit final was the first event, after the opening ceremony of the UCI Track World Cup in Mexico. Team USN led from the start, always ahead of their Italian competitors, almost catching them near the end. They won comfortably with a time of 3:24.419 shaving hundredths off their personal best, and a clear 8 seconds ahead of Italy.

Head Coach Darren Tudor was pleased with the second ride, “The girls rode a lot better in the final, improving technically. We learnt a lot from the first ride and slightly changed our tactics. This worked for the girls and they secured a comfortable win over the Italians. Their 2k splits, in comparison with gold and silver ride off, are very promising. I’m pleased with their result.”

Canada later took the gold medal over Ukraine, who settled for silver.

Jon Mould, from Newport, also began his third and final Track World Cup of the season in the Omnium. Going second in the Flying Lap, Jon posted 13.461 putting him 15th out of 22 starters. The Omnium Points Race gave Jon the opportunity to move up the Omnium standings.

Planning to ride patiently in the early stages, due to the high temperature and altitude inside the velodrome, Jon later gained a total of three laps and collected 10 sprint points to place him 5th in the Points Race. His elimination ride was also a good result, finishing in 8th place; Jon sits in 7th going into the second day of competition.

Head Coach Darren Tudor was pleased with Jon’s race, “He put in a good performance in the Points Race and read the race well. We have to take into account heat and oxygen levels when thinking about how to race; hopefully Jon will be able to build on his results tomorrow for the second day of Omnium.”

After performing well in the Women’s Team Pursuit, Amy Roberts, from Pontyberem, also rode in the Women’s Points Race facing tough competition from world class female cyclists. Amy gained a lap early on and was active in the sprints, to finish in 6th place, completing her first Track World Cup season.

Competition continues tomorrow with the Men and Women’s Omnium and Women’s Individual Pursuit.
