Sunderland Clarion held their annual open 25 mile time trial in Ponteland on Sunday, 16 June. The event which sees riders tackle a gruelling route along the A696, acted as the National Clarions 25 mile championship and also the Northumbria and Durham Cycling Association 25 mile trophy championship.

The event saw 42 riders take to the start line, including 15 representing the hosts.This was the biggest field since Allan Smith began running the event some 15 years ago. The riders faced a strong headwind on the way out to Kirkwhelpington, on a dry and sunny morning.

The event overall was won with a strong performance by Andy Fuller (GS Metro) in a time of 57:04, just shy of the time he recorded earlier in the season of 57:01. Fuller also secured the Northumbria and Durham Cycling Association 25 mile championship. In second place was Simon Dale of Nottingham Clarion CC, in 58:04, who took the National Clarion championship half a minute ahead of third placed, and second Clarion rider, Mark Ewing (West Lothian Clarion – SCU).

The David Craig Memorial Trophy, awarded for the first Sunderland Clarion rider, was won by Craig Stephenson competing in his first 25 mile test against the clock, along with 11 other Sunderland riders. Stephenson clocked a time of 1:00:33, after admittedly starting off too strong before settling into a rhythm, which saw him take 11th overall. Michael Sloanes was second in from the hosts with a time of 1:02:27, over 3 minutes ahead of Stuart Grey in third with a time of 1:05:50. The three top 20 finishes saw Sunderland take the National Clarion team event on the day.

In the juniors competition the podium saw two Tyneside Vagabonds, in first and third, with 16 year old Adam Wild completing the course in 1:08:56, while Joshua Craven came in third with a strong 1:15:19 for the thirteen year old. The second step of the podium was taken by another Sunderland Clarion debutant, with Cameron Wright clocking 1:12:06. The first and only woman was Sunderland Clarion’s Ingrid Shepherd in 1:12:50.

Report: New Forest 32 – Gilfillan Top of the Tree

James Gilfillan made it two out of two, winning the New Forest CC 32 mile Circuit of the Forest, a week after victory in the Sotonia 25.

Gilfillan, was training hard in the National Park the previous day but still had the legs to clock 1:14:12, over two minutes clear of Gary Dighton (Poole Wh). Dighton had 1:47 in hand on third placed Gregg Parker (CC Weymouth), although Parker was not the only one to get held up by the free- wandering New Forest ponies.

Scratch man Stephen Whitewick was a non-starter; Whitewick had punctured in the National 10 on Saturday and with low morale, had opted to stay at home. On a near windless morning Gilfillan, off number 25, quickly started to catch his minute men.

The course takes the riders across open heathland after negotiating Lymington High Street, the Hampshire sailing town peaceful at 07:15 am. A fast stretch on the A35 after Lyndhurst before a left hander returns to New Milton and the chequered board.

Spare a thought for Andy Bryson, a puncture cost him a possible podium place and by the time he made it back to the HQ most were already home.

News: Final Championship Prep for Bottrill in Melton Olympic 10

Matt Bottrill on a new Giant TT bike finishes preparation for National 10 with victory in the Melton Olympic 10 mile time trial

On a cold but dry Saturday afternoon, a selection of Britain’s best time trialists took part in Melton Olympic’s 10 mile time, held at six hills in Leicestershire. The course involved sections of dual-carriageway and the hardest one came from the Six-hills hotel to the Shoby cross roads. With five sharp corners to negotiate, it would be an ideal simulation of next weekend’s National 10 mile championship.

The selection of riders taking part included some of the finest UK tester’s and the standard had been set high with Matthew Sinclair (Lutterworth Cycle Centre) being the first rider to break the 21 minute barrier in a time of 20.50, proving the high winds would not be the best of conditions for those taking part. A few moments later, the in-form Terry Wright Cycles rider, Brett Harwood lowered this to 20.45.

Next came Adam Gascoigne (Team Pedal Power) and like Bottrill was also riding the latest Giant Trinity time trial bike and he covered the course in a rapid 20.37 to add another great performance to his growing list.

Final rider on the road was Matthew Bottrill, riding a new bike fropm sponsor Giant, Bottrill came in full preparation mode for next weekend’s National 10 Championship. Going through the championship motions of preparing for the race, Bottrill put his bike and ability to the test. Riding to a schedule set by coach and sponsor Bob Tobin (cyclepowermeters.com), Bottrill was soon hitting speeds of over 28 mph into the block headwind.

Coming on to the technical section of the course, Bottrill gave the new bike a real test and was flying around the technical section and corners. The final section of the course was a tailwind and hitting an average speed of 34 mph, Bottrill stopped the clock in 19.27 for the 10 miles.

It was a convincing win and his fastest time ever ridden on the course. Bottrill commented afterwards “I’m really happy with that. This week as been the training from hell, but I feel I’m stronger than I’ve ever been and the new bike is just incredible. I can’t thank everybody enough for supplying me with the bike. I’m really looking forward to next weekend’s Championship and know going into the race I could not have done any more, so lets see what happens ”

Win for local rider James Gilfillan in the Sotonia 25 mile tme trial on Saturday

Repeat win for Gilfillan in Sotonia CC 25, Saturday May 18th – by Julian Gee

It was ‘as you were’ in the Sotonia CC 25 held on the P128 course west of Southampton, with Poole based James Gilfillan (Velo Refined) claiming his second win in the event to follow up his 2012 success.

Despite a poor weather forecast earlier in the week, the day dawn overcast but dry with only a slight westerly breeze and with the sun coming our once the event had started it was a pleasant Spring day for the small but quality field. The course uses a circuit which is covered there times taking in a variety of both single and dual carriage way roads, which were fairly quiet on this Saturday morning.

Despite the good weather, some riders described the conditions as ‘sticky’ with no real help in any direction. Gilfillan’s winning time was a little slower than last year’s 53.52, coming home in 54.25 this time. Second placed Andy Bryson (Peter Hansford Racing Team) enjoyed better luck than 2012 when he had mechanical trouble and this time finished in an impressive 55.16, with Simon Berogna (Velo Club St Raphael) making up the top three in 56.27.

First veteran was a previous winner and regular supporter of the event, Ray Hughes (Clarence Wheelers CC) who this time finished fourth in 56.54, whilst the first lady home was the promoting club’s Jenny Hill who improved over two and half minutes to record 1.06.29.

However, possibly the biggest star of the day was Sotonia CC’s Phil Connell who got up especially early to go out and sign the course (no small undertaking!) and still had enough energy to take 1.24 off his personal best, posting a fine 1.02.42. What a fine example to all!

James told “Eamonn Deane” “I am pleased with the win as its been a slow start this year so its nice to race in the sun and its always nice to race locally.”

Matt Bottrill takes 11th win of the season in South Pennine 25 mile time trial on May 11

Saturday afternoon, Drag2zero.com’s Matthew Bottrill took part in South Pennine 25 mile time trial, with torential rain & hail storms, it was a really hard day for all the rider’s that assembled to take part. The Leicestershire course would see riders riding 13 miles on the out would leg riding into a block head wind. And a return leg of 12 miles, into a super fast tail wind.

The standard had been set high with Adam Gascoigne, Team Pedal Power setting a time of 51.16. This was then followed shortly by Brett Harwood, Terry Wright Cycles 51.25. With just one spot left on the podium, it was up to Matthew Bottrill to produce the only sub 30 mph ride, clocking a time of 48.09.

With just two weeks before the National Men’s National 10 mile championship we asked Bottrill, about his preparation ” Yes everything is looking good, I’m just really enjoying racing, and looking forward to the championship, I’m doing everything I can to arrive at the race is peak form”

Had the weather at 1400 been like that at 1505 I think that we would have called the event off but with half the field gone we decided to leave it to individuals’ judgement. The number of non-starters – and non-finishers – meant that some of the veterans’ age categories were not won but I have added additional junior and ladies’ prizes. We shall try to boost the list next year to compensate.

Luke Davies (Velo Club St Raphael) wins the Welsh CA open 25 mile time trial on the R25/3L on the 5th of May

On a fair but far from ideal day the worries over the cones on the road vanished with a fully open course available for the riders today. It was fairly chilly at the start as the riders from the Women, Juniors and Men (Overflow) event reported to the Start Timekeeper. It was soon realised that there were no ‘float’ rides available today and hard graft was needed.

The results soon showed who had done their training in 2013 and more significantly who had not! First under the hour ride went to Gareth Jones Clevedon & District with a ‘personal’ of 59:59 – good enough to win the Best Improvement award.

The first Woman under the hour was Alexis Barnes Cardiff Ajax CC in 59:11 and with no performance in the last three seasons to compare to people soon realised that good times were starting to come in. In the Juniors section Will Houghton Hillingdon CC charged in with 56:19 again there was no comparable time in the last three years.

We did not have to wait long until Luke Davies VC St. Raphael flew in with a 53:56 – over a minute slower than his ‘personal’ however but good enough to hold off late charges from Dan Colman Pembrokeshire Velo 53:12. Times for the women were now getting faster, with Hayley Simmonds being rewarded for the long trek from Cambridge with an excellent 56:01 and a ‘personal’ of almost 3 minutes. The time was too good for defending National Women’s BAR Paula Moseley Climb on Bikes RT who could manage a 56:43: a time which tied second place with Gillian Pears Bath CC.

The Men’s event had marginally better conditions but it was soon obvious that it was a day for the strong boys: the first quick time coming from David Williams Fibrax Wrexham RC with a 51:35 a time good enough to win the Team Championship backed up by David Crawley 51:05 and Chris Edmondson 53:41 giving a time of 2:36:21.

There was quite a wait for the first rider ‘under’ with Steve Irwin Kingston Wheelers off no. 80 came in with a 49:36. Andy Wilkinson Port Sunlight making his first visit to the course told me he was not expecting to do anything much but still managed a 48:56.

There were still some good riders out there. Local boy Kieron Davies Bynea CC shaved 11 seconds off his personal to do 49:16 but ended up outside the top three. Was Wilko’s ride good enough to win? Jeff Jones www.drag2zero.com soon gave us the answer with a 48:28. Defending Champion and last man off Rob Pears Bath CC stopped the clock at 49:12 which was good enough for 3rd place.

Matt Bottrill (Drag2Zero) ride’s to new course record in round 3 of national time trial series

Sunday afternoon and many of Britain’s finest time trialist gathered in the small town of Swaffham, Norfolk, to take part in round three of the National Time Trial series, riders would complete a distance of 23.6 miles, taking in the villages of Crimplesdale, Oxborough, and finally finishing in the town of Swaffham. The roads were harsh and with hardly any traffic on the quiet roads, it would be a true test of bike handling skills.

The event tied in well for most riders. The course being used for the National time trial 10 mile championship in three weeks time was just down the road, so it was an ideal opportunity to test the circuit out. Both events being promoted by event organiser Don Saunders.

The weather was warm, and with hardly any wind it would be a fast race. The first rider home was Nick Le Cocq, Caesarean cc in a time of 55.09, proving the circuit was no drag strip. This was then battered down by Brett Harwood, Terry Wright cycles with 52.20, and a few moments later Dean Robson,Somerset cc lowered this to 52.14.

Out on the road there was a good battle developing between Scott Walker, Mg Decor CBS and series leader Matthew Bottrill www.Drag2zero.com. Walker, started two minutes in front of Bottrill and by the halfway point, Bottrill had caught and passed Walker, to put him in the lead, with the hardest section of the race to come. It was clear Bottrill would take the lead, baring incident.

But for the eagerly awaiting crowd of spectators, nobody expected a breaking of the course record by over three minutes. Bottrill stopped the clock in a breathtaking 47.01, average over 30mph! Walker also did a cracking ride for second place in 51.09

Asked about the win Bottrill replied “I’m really happy with that and today in general. We tied todays race in with a visit to the National 10 course and I’m really happy with both. Todays course suited me well. I came with a plan of doing a 30mph ride and my coach Bob Tobin cyclepowermeters.com worked out a plan to achive this. I’m happy to say I stuck to it!”

“I love racing roads like this and this is what I see time trailing should be about. Maybe riders should get a time with an avarge speed, then they could see improvenments they’re making, rather than chasing duel-carragways looking for a fast time?”

Open 10 – Saturday
Four 20 minute rides for Saturday’s 10 is quite exceptional though Conall Yates of In-Gear Quickvit Trainsharp rose to the challenge to win with 20:13 and retain his SCA title for the second year running.

In the Ladies 10 competition both Lara Taylor of VC Godalming & Haslemere (23:56) and Helen Bulimore of Trainsharp RT (25:10) retained their first and second place crowns from last year.

The fastest team of three were Nick Dwyer, Rob Pelham and Tom Glandfield of Lewes Wanderers with a combined 01:03:20.

Open 25 – Sunday
Sunday’s 25 saw the return of Michael Hutchinson of In-Gear Quickvit Trainsharp and an entry from Olympic Gold medallist Joanna Rowsell of Wiggle Honda Pro Cycling.

Expectations were high of new men and women’s course records being set and with good conditions on the morning, both duly delivered.

G25/93 features a mix of rolling country roads, the A24 dual carriageway and the final 12.5 miles on the rolling single carriageway A283. The men’s course record was previously held by Sean Yates (50:28) and the ladies was set by Rebecca Romero in 2007 with 58:10.

Going against the form book, Rowsell was set off on a 9 as the last of the ladies and held off her minute man Rob Pelham for nearly 18 miles. She crossed the finish line in a fantastic 55:38 completely smashing the ladies record and eventually claiming 9th overall.

With Hutch catching his team mate Charl Jordaan for 5 minutes at the 17 mile mark, it was just a case of seeing what his winning margin was going to be at the finish. Having come close to the course record the year before, he firmly shut the record book with a staggering 49:31.

Conall Yates put in another fantastic ride to claim 2nd with 52:59 with Steve Kane of Brighton Excelsior third (53:20). Hutchinson, Yates and Jordaan were the fastest team of three with a combined 2:39:13.

Report: Bottrill wins VTTA 25

Matthew Bottrill (Drag2Zero) was once again in fine form taking victory in the VTTA 25 mile time trial held at six-hills in Leicstershire

On a wind swept day, with hail storms and rain showers, it would be a true test for all those taking part.

There was a good field with a host of top names, first rider to break the 55 minute barrier was in form rider, Adam Gascoigne (Team Pedal Power) in a very rapid 53.52,and proving it wasn’t a day for fast times on the undulating Leicestershire roads.

The next fast men to hit the road, were James Perkins (Zenith/Buzz Cycles) 54.06 and Matthew Sinclair (Lutterworth Cycle Centre) 54.14. Final rider on the day was Matthew Bottrill (Drag2zero.com) and with knowledge of the local roads, the Leicestershire rider put his Giant Trinity SL time trial machine to full use. Equipped with a prototype disk wheel created by Simon Smart, the aerodynamic specialist and owner of the drag2zero team, with the high winds and torrential storms it would be a true test!

Accelerating from the start, the noise coming from the bike was unreal and soon up to speed of 30 mph, Bottrill was storming through the field and hit the halfway point in 26.03. With the hardest part of the circuit covered, Bottrill adopted his best aero position and crossed the line in a rapid 49.53, putting him well clear of the field and knotching up his ninth victory of the season.

Asked about his winning performance Bottrill replied,”I’m really happy with todays ride and want to dedicate today’s victory to my Grandad, who was taken into hospital, at the start of the week. He follows all my results, so hopefully with him reading this and with the support of his family, we can get him back home”.

“Along with the emotions I had, I was really pleased with the handling of the new disc wheel I was riding today developed by Simon Smart in the Drag2zero wind tunnel. With hours of windtunnel time and development its a real special wheel,and like nothing I’ve ever ridden. The acceleration, handling and speed, can only be described as phenomenal and pairing with the Enve 8.9, it can only be described as the fastest wheel set out there.”

Report: Bottrill wins 2nd round of National Time Trial Series

Matt Bottrill (Drag2Zero) wins 2nd round of National Time Trial Series and sets a new course record

Sunday morning saw many of the best time trialists in Britain taking part in the second round of the National Time Trial Series. Held on the hard roads of Leicstershire, in the Village of Wymeswold, riders would complete two laps of a 14.5 mile circuit to give a total distance of 29miles.

The weather was ideal for racing with blue skies but strong winds would be a true test for all riders taking part. First rider to hit the start from the seeded riders was Brett Harwood (Terry Wright Cycles) who did an opening lap of 34.36.

This was then battered down by Scott Walker (Mg Decor Rt) in a time of 33.12. Last of the seeded riders, included Daniel Barnett (North Notts Olympic), Adam Gascoigne (Team Pedal Power) and last off was National 100 mile champion Matthew Bottrill (www.Drag2zero.com)

By the end of the first lap both riders who had started ahead of Bottrill were caught and past who was on local roads and was wanting to set a new course record held by Ironman Tri-athlete Philip Graves 1.03.06.

Bottrill’s opening lap of 30.36, but him well clear of the rest, but with the wind rising on the penultimate lap, he would have to push himself, and the Giant Trinity Sl time trial machine with Smart-Enve 8.9s wheels to the limit to reach the new course record!

Negotiating the technical circuit at speeds between 30-35mph, and the run in off the Nether Broughton descent topping out at over 50mph, Bottrill hit the finishing climbs, catching his six minute man, Alex Royle, Banjo Cycles. Pushing all the way to the line, Bottrill stopped the clock in an incredible 1.01.51, slicing 1 minute 15 seconds off the record and recording an average speed of 28.1mph

Asked about his winning performance Bottrill replied “I’m well pleased with this ride. The form is good and I really enjoyed every moment of racing around this course. These were local roads for me, so there was a lot of support out there today so its very nice to add another win for the year and a new course record. You have to make the most of these rides as you never know when your form will go, but I’m loving every minute of training and racing at the minute!”
