Premier Calendar: 2011 Lincoln Grand Prix

Larry Hickmott looks back at yet another fantastic Lincoln Grand Prix with a report and rider reactions as well as more than 200 photos of the race.

Above: 21 year old Scott Thwaites, wins the Lincoln GP. Interesting piece of nostalgia is that the team manager for Endura Racing, Brian Smith, also won the race as well, 21 years ago, the year Scott was born. So now we know why! Brian was 22 when he won the race.

In a sprint finish at the end of 86 gruelling miles around Lincoln, Scott Thwaites of Endura Racing had the biggest win of his career as he crossed the line lengths clear of his nearest rivals. Perfectly positioned in the closing 500 metres, Thwaites waited for his rivals to run out of gas before he gave it everything to get to the line and win the 2011 Lincoln Grand Prix.

REPORT:
The Lincoln Grand Prix is without a doubt one of the races that riders in Britain would love to win which is why every cyclist with a racing licence in the land, or nearly so, enters the race or at least tries to! Getting a spot on the start line though is not easy, especially with numbers restricted to 160. A look down the start sheet though and there was plenty of quality in there and the big question was whether the race would end in a sprint after years of small groups or solo riders winning the race.

This year, more than any other, teams have strengthened their line ups and that has meant races are more controlled than ever and why at DoonHame two of the three stages ended in bunch kicks. But with 11 ascents of Michaelgate, a 1 in 6 brute of a climb on cobbles, and the carnage that occurs on the false flat after that, it remained to be seen how much having a strong team would affect the race.

Photo Album from the 2011 Lincoln GP

The night before the Lincoln GP, teams started to arrive at the event. In the race hotel, Rapha and the 100%ME team vehicles were parked up and at a hotel down the road, Endura Racing were coming together for another big British race.

The Endura team has two squads, one in Europe and the other in Britain and the team had hoped one of their winning riders in 2011, Alex Blain was going to ride for them but he was ill, as was Callum Wilkinson. So, a young Robert Hassan was drafted in and also riding the race was the teams MTB professional, Oli Beckingsale.

First at the team hotel was mechanic Brendan with the Look race bikes and the riders then converged on the hotel from many parts of the country north and south. New clothing from Endura was waiting for them and then a little later that evening, the team meeting with director sportif Julian Winn.

‘Winny’ has ridden this race and been on the podium, so he knows the score and within the Endura number was a rider who has also been on the podium, Ian Wilkinson. Lincoln was his first race back after breaking a collarbone and ribs in a crash at Normandy and it was a case of see it how it goes for the Lancashire rider.

During the team meeting, Rob Partridge was named as one of the key riders and Julian also gave Scott Thwaites a free role. A few weeks back at the Tesco CiCLE Classic, Julian had told me that Scott was ready to step up to the top level in Britain and at the CiCLE Classic, Scott was one of the front riders proving he had the legs to go the distance.

That night, the rain fell out of the sky and gave Lincoln a right drenching and it was still raining as the teams had breakfast the next morning. Thankfully, as wet cobbles are not fun to ride on especially on a 1:6 incline, the rain cleared and the sun come out for the start.

The riders lined up at the same starting point the race has had for many years at the Yarborough Leisure Centre in Lincoln and a little later than planned, the riders rolled away and their was no leisurely ride to Lincoln as the hammer went down straight away. Position counts for so much in the Lincoln so the battle for position before the climb of Michaelgate can see the race not just get very fast but also physical.

One lap after the start, back at the Yarborough Leisure Centre, and three riders had broken free, Tom Murray (Sigma Sport/Specialized), Kristian House (Rapha Condor Sharp) and a 21 year old from Endura Racing, Scott Thwaites. A few seconds adrift was UK Youth’s James Stewart.

The break looked doomed to failure as they only had a few seconds and there were a lot of fresh legs behind them but with three big teams represented, the gap did open and continued to do so for a few laps to come.

Behind them, the sight of the once compact peloton all lined out with gaps forming between riders was proof that with the tailwind, the race was at full gas so all credit to the break for managing to hold off the chasers. The tell tale signs of a fall in the peloton were also there as David McCann of Ireland, the 25 mile record holder, came past with mud down one side where he had obviously been on the deck.

Another lap later, or around seven miles, and the leading three had opened up a big gap on the peloton and it was looking very dangerous. Murray had won the week before, Kristian House is a former British RR champion and Scott Thwaites had showed at CiCLE he could race all day.

Lap after lap, the three leaders stayed away until after 90 minutes of freedom, they were caught in the lanes on the outskirts of Lincoln. Part of that was down to the pressure from the Motorpoint team who had missed the break.

Tom Murray leads the race as the start of the three man break begins after one complete lap.

Endura racing though hadn’t finished with the race. The riders had been told in the team meeting to make sure they were part of the early move and Scott Thwaites had done his job. Now it was time for the team leader to have his say in the race.

The race was only just over half way when Rob Partridge went on the attack. He flew up Michaelgate, gapping Zak Dempster who pulled over at the top of Michaelgate for his Rapha teammate Dean Downing to hit the front.

No-one went with Partridge though and he spent the next lap, with the help of another rider, tapping out a fast tempo around the course. He was caught shortly after Michaelgate and the race really came to life then. Motorpoint had a chat and Ian Bibby attacked in one gutter up Michaelgate and Jonny McEvoy attacked in the other. Only Zak Dempster was able to go with them and that break looked very dangerous but again, it came back.

Eventually a selection was made over the final few laps of around 20 riders including Dean Downing, Zak Dempster, Jon Teiran-Lock and Andrew Tennant from Rapha Condor Sharp, David McCann (Ireland), Simon Gaywood (Corley Cycles), Liam Holohan and Matt Cronshaw (Raleigh), Sam Harrison (100%ME), Yanto Barker (Prendragon Le Col Colnago), Ian Bibby and Jonny McEvoy (Motorpoint) and from Endura Racing, Rob Partridge, Dave Clarke and Scott Thwaites.

The attacking though hadn’t finished, A solo bid by Ian Bibby with a lap to go saw that lead group split into two as Rapha put numbers on the front to bring Bibby back but in the end it was cramp that got the better of the Motorpoint rider and then McCann used his time trial skills to go off the front. The group was not having any of that though and at the bottom of Michaelgate, a dozen or so riders hit the cobbled slopes. Bibby and McEvoy took up the running with Dempster in the box seat as was Thwaites.

The young Endura rider had not just been helping to make the race but also watching how the other riders rode the climb and he used that knowledge to time his winning move to perfection. Coming round the corner first, the youngster from Endura racing put his head down and not hesitating for a moment, not even to raise an arm in in victory, he raced flat out all the way to the line. The expression on his face though said it all, disbelief. Just as his manager Julian Winn was speechless, Scott also couldn’t believe what he’d just done.

There were hugs for Scott from teammates and rivals and his brother Mark and then his manager who knew just how much of a victory this was for the youngster.

Afterwards, Scott said “This was totally unexpected. I felt quite good and got in the break and with that I thought it was job done. I felt okay in the break but not that strong as I think Kristian House and Tom Murray were a lot stronger in the break than me. I listened to what the guys said before the race and stayed at the front and that worked out for me today.”

“Going up the climb, I know that a lot of people die as they ease off to go round the corner so I didn’t give it full gas at the bottom and just made sure I held third place up there and as soon as it turned left, I gave it everything and people were coming back past me and I can’t believe it”.

“With Rob Partridge and Dave Clarke in the break, we had a really strong team in that group. We were always talking so knew who felt good and we followed the moves and I said Rob and Clarkey, if it comes down to a sprint, I’ll go for it but I would have been happy to work for them if they wanted to attack.”

Ian Bibby leads Dempster and McEvoy on a dangerous looking move with a few laps to go.

“The racing is different this year and you can’ always set it up for one person because there is so much attacking and closing down by different teams, so you have to keep yourself in the race really. I am really improving on getting my bunch position right and I had great help from the guys in the team. Wilko (Ian Wilkinson) did a fantastic job today after coming back from injury and Oli Beckingsale as well and helped keep me out of the wind which makes such a big difference.”

“This year could be a big year for me and I hope I can win a lot more races and the do the sponsors proud. The team has big ambitions and we have to step up to the plate. This is our job and we have to work hard at it. They provide us with the best equipment with these Look bikes and the Endura clothing and so we have to work to hard to pay back the sponsors for what they put in.”

Director Sportif, Julian Winn said: “I’m over the moon, I certainly knew Scott could do it and already told him he has the legs to win a big race and it’s just great for a young rider to be coming through. He rode well all day, was in the early break on a course that suited him and I’m quite speechless! It’s absolutely superb!”

For Ian Bibby (Motorpoint), it was disappointment as he talked about his race, “I drilled it up the hill and there was me, Jonny (McEvoy) and Dempster away, did a few turns and then I jumped them, got away and had around 10 or 15 seconds with just the descent to come and then I cramped up.”

“I had to ease up, was caught and for a little while was off the back but after a breather, I rode back onto them on the main road and sat in and then hit Michaelgate good. Scott came past a few metres from the line.”

Rob Partridge (above, Endura Racing) “I just thought I’d put in a bit of a tester in and I didn’t look back until after the cobbles finished and saw no-one was with me. I had hoped some one would come with me and then I just cruised. Another rider came with me and I thought if we can stay away until the top of Michagate again, someone might come across. It was a bit of gamble and maybe it took some zip out of me for the finish.”

“Towards the end, I spoke with Scott, didn’t ask for him to work for me as we both had our own opportunities. As a team, I think we rode great. We always had numbers there and we took the race to them and its nice to come away with the win.”

Dean Downing (Rapha Condor Sharp): A former winner of the Lincoln Grand Prix fell late in the race which could have destroyed his hopes of another win. He says it was a strange old race. “Very rarely does a break go like that on the first lap but we had a guy, Kristian (House) in it as did Endura and Sigma. It then became very negative after that and then when that came back, we had a lot of guys at the front and people going hard on the climbs and splitting it.”

“It was really hard out the back of the course. The A57 was a block headwind so a lot of people were parking up so it was always coming back together which never really happens in the Lincoln. Normally, it splits to bits and people are chasing the race.”

“I think it was with three to go that a 25 man move went which I was happy to be in because the lap before I crashed on the climb when some guy turned right on me and I hit one of the cones, unshipped my chain and hurt my wedding tackle before chasing back.”

“We had the most guys in there and Andy and Jon were sat on the front for quite a bit to make sure we could get the sprint at the end. I ended up leading Zak out down the hill towards the climb and Zak said he went for it and his legs gave way.”

“We’re all disappointed as a team because we’re all passionate about racing to win but you can’t win them all. Fantastic ride by young Scott Thwaites. He rode a good race so fair play to him.”

Jonny McEvoy (Motorpoint): “It was perfect when Ian was away but then he came back and up the finish hill, Dempster came past me while Bibby was in front. Then Dempster blew a bit and I took a really bad line through the corners and I slowed down. Scott then came past me and Bibby so fair play to him.”

“We would have liked to win but we can’t complain with two podium finishes. It’s always an exciting race to be a part of. We could of really done with having someone in the leading pack from the start. Bibby and Will were up there most of the race and pushed into the pack hard. Will did a great job until his legs seized up. He really helped us after the start we had.”

Will Bjergfelt (Motorpoint): “We thought that we could have won the race, but we can’t complain with 2nd and 3rd. I felt good going up the Michaelgate climb, it was tough but I was on for at least 5th when my legs locked up completely. I would have liked to be able to help Johnny and Ian on the final lap more. I think we could have pushed on and won from there.”
