Preview: SuP6R Six A Series Set for Falkirk Finale

Colin Renton writes … The 2011 Scottish Power Renewables SuP6R Six Series for A riders reaches its climax on Sunday when the Billy Warnock Memorial Road Race takes place. The event is hosted by Falkirk Bicycle Club, with Grangemouth Rugby Club as race headquarters.

Current series leader James McCallum (Rapha Condor-Sharp) is an absentee as he is on duty south of the border. The Commonwealth Games medallist currently has a 91 point advantage over Gary Hand (Endura/Pedal Power Development Team), winner of the inaugural Sup6r Six competition in 2008, meaning McCallum can still be caught.

Hand’s team mate Robbie Hassan has two wins to his credit so far and will be looking to take his tally to three, although overall success in the series is just beyond his reach. The teenager clearly enjoys the course, having finished runner up to Evan Oliphant in last year’s Billy Warnock, which was named event of the year by Scottish Cycling. And, a fine performance in last weekend’s East Yorkshire Classic confirmed that he is in fine form.

The race also features a battle for the bragging rights between the Murdochs, with Peter and Gordon of Team Cyclelane currently occupying fourth and fifth spots in the standings. While Oliphant is also an absentee, the 77 strong entry features four elite category riders. Davie Lines (Endura/Pedal Power Development Team) is on home territory and probably knows the roads around Grangemouth better than any rider in the field, while the Herbalife/Wheelbase squad will travel north with a trio of elites in the shape of Richard Bolt, Ian Taylor and Dillon Byrne.

Meanwhile, Tom Anderson, Neil Cameron and Stevie Dunn will be riding for the pride of the host club.  Dunn won the race in 2007 and his successor, Graham McGarrity (Dooleys RT) will also be on the start line on Sunday. Race organiser Craig Moffat and his helpers have again produced an extensive prize list with the support of local sponsors including Velocity 44 Stirling, Solid Rock Cycles, Balmore, Stirling Cycle Repairs, Wheelsmith.co.uk, Larbert and Malcom Allan Butchers, Falkirk. In addition, Ice Factory Studios of Falkirk is the official race photographer and Calluna Flower Design, Stenhousemuir is donating podium prizes.

The event is in memory of the late Billy Warnock, who passed away in November 2004.  He was a stalwart of Scottish cycling with successes that included the Glasgow-Dunoon road race and the concluding the stage of the 2007 Milk Race – a result that earned him second place overall. Warnock went on to mentor the young Jason MacIntyre and is fondly remembered by members of the Falkirk and many other clubs across Scotland.

The B Series, for which this is round five, remains wide open, with current leader Dale McCallum (Bicycleworks) currently in the lead by just 19 points from Euan MacPherson (Dunfermline CC), while Gary Cross and Peter Hale of the host club lie third and fourth respectively and will be keen to make local knowledge tell.

Meanwhile, with her nearest challenger Lee Craigie not competing, women’s leader Jenny Stanning (Edinburgh RC) can extend her advantage in the overall standings. The A race, which starts at 10am will be contested over five laps of the 14.8 mile main circuit, with hill primes on laps 1 and 3, plus sprint primes on laps 2 and 4. The 50 mile B race gets underway 30 minutes later and features a hill prime on the second of the three laps plus a sprint prime on the final circuit.
