British Women’s Circuit Race Championships & Elite Circuit Race Series Final Round
This Sunday will see a day of fast and furious crit action with the Women’s Circuit Race Championships leading the way a week after the Men’s title was decided in Beverley (Graham Briggs).

Current Women’s champion, Hannah Barnes (Motorpoint), who is currently racing in Assen (Holland), is set to return overnight to Preston like she did last year to take on World Champion and former Circuit Race champion Dani King (Horizon Fitness-Prendas Ciclismo).

The support cast is also pretty impressive. Lucy Garner (Motorpoint), who has been dominating a lot of races this year in the sprints has just returned from the European Track Championships as has Elinor Barker (Cardiff Ajax) and Harriet Owen  (Motorpoint) so they should have plenty of speed in their legs for these rapid events around town centres. The rider list for the event is below …

Elite Circuit Series
In a series dominated by Rapha Condor Sharp who have tackled each round with a strong line -up, the fifth and final round takes place in the Preston city centre on Sunday 7th August. With a stage race in Spain taking place around the same time, there will be a number of riders missing from the line-up entered but the clash between Endura Racing and Rapha Condor Sharp will continue and promises to be a right royal battle.

Last year, there was lots of controversy between the two teams with Ian Wilkinson dominating the series but in 2011, it has been the two Deano’s, Downing and Windsor who have shared the wins between them.

Which means Endura Racing, like all the other teams competing, are keen to put a stop to Rapha’s winning streak in the circuit races.  Not since Scott Thwaites (Endura Racing) won in Otley, has another team managed to get a look in and Rapha have already clocked up a hat-trick of wins during the series.

They’ll be hoping to make it four out of five with new Men’s Circuit Race Champion Graham Briggs in their line-up and his teammates, Dean Downing and Dean Windsor ready to ensure their team continue their winning streak. The two Deano’s hold the top two positions in the series above Briggsy and the battle for the series win will be between the men in black.

No repeat of this win in 2011 as Kristian House will be elsewhere but perhaps Dean Windsor(2nd here) will have the crowd going Aussie, Aussie, Aussie …

One rider who won’t be there is Olympic Champion Ed Clancy who is in Spain for a stage race. A look through the start sheet also reveals the Motorpoint team are missing as they too are riding a UCI stage race in Spain as will part of the Rapha Condor team.

Missing from the online list is Ian Wilkinson (Endura Racing) but his team have confirmed he’s down to race it and there are plenty of other big names like the GB Under 23 Academy team led by Luke Rowe. They have just returned from a successful European Track Champs and having strength in depth, they may well give the racing a whole new edge.

Winner from round 1, Scott Thwaites (Endura Racing) is entered as is Simon Gaywood (Corley Cycles), one of the few riders to deny a Rapha rider a place on the podium which he did at Stafford. Bronze medallist in the Crit Champs, Tom Murray rides for Sigma Sport which has as ever, a strong line up and they could spring a surprise, as could many riders from the other teams.

The young stars of the future will also get to race the circuit in the morning.

The race…
Now in its fourth year, the Preston Elite Circuit Race is part of a day-long event which includes cycle stunt shows, free Go Ride skills sessions, a climbing wall, street theatre and the chance to do two laps of the official circuit before the races begin.

Taking place in the heart of Preston, the riders will sprint around the 1km town centre circuit at speeds of up to 40mph. The course will see riders start at the Covered Market on Earl Street, before turning left onto Lancaster Road, Ormskirk Road, then into Ringway, left into Friargate, left onto Orchard Street and finally back to the Covered Market. Hundreds of riders are expected to descend on the city centre for the day, from youngsters taking their first steps in the sport through to World  champions and Olympic medallists.

Councillor Peter Rankin, Leader of Preston City Council, says: “The Grand Prix is a hugely important fixture in Preston’s event and sporting calendar, and it is a delight to welcome world class athletes to the city once again.
“The day has proved extremely successful over the past three years, something which looks set to continue as we continue to build momentum heading toward the Guild and European City of sport next year.”
