Day 2: 2011 European Track Championships

No medals for Great Britain on Day 2 but lots of promise for them on Day 3, Sir Chris Hoy has to withdraw from the racing due to illness…

Day 2 | Click for Day 1 Report & Results

Session 1

The big news of the first session was that Sir Chris Hoy withdrew from the competition due to not feeling well after his flying 200 metre effort. Shane Sutton, in an audio interview with British Cycling says of Chris Hoy’s withdrawal from the competition, “he hasn’t been feeling too well and got up this morning, warmed up on the rollers and did the qualifying but wasn’t feeling right. After an examination by the doctor we decided to withdraw him.”

“He has a chest infection, blocked sinuses etc, but I think the thing is that he went quite deep yesterday (Team Sprint) and after wrestling with it for a week, that one effort probably pushed him over the edge. The best thing was to stop now, go home, recuperate and get ready for the World Cup in Kazakhstan.”

Chris admitted to VeloUK he was gutted having to pull out of the racing with Sutton adding  “it’s one of this little hurdles you have to jump and I am sure he’ll be ready of Kazakhstan.”

MEN’S OMNIUM
World Champion in 2010, Ed Clancy entered the hurt box as he called it on Twitter with a flying lap (250 metre) time of  13.420 and that time was never beaten so after the first round of the Omnium, the winner in the Team Pursuit lead the competition. Read what Ed says about the Omnium here…

Men’s Devil Take the Hindmost

After 10th in the Points race which saw him drop to fourth overall, it was time for the Elimination race, the most physical of races with Clancy wearing the distinctive ‘potty’ helmet.

The former world champion ducked and dived his way to 6th place, living dangerously at times and so close to being out on a number of occasions, he continued to scrape though with a last minute throw of the bike until his legs finally gave up on him and he could sprint no more.  and being eliminated with five riders left. At least managed to avoid the argy bargy and the crashes! The winner was the French rider Coquard while leader Viviani was second and strengthened his lead. Clancy meanwhile moved up to third overall.

Ed Clancy is on 17 points after 3 events, seven behind Frenchman Coquard and eight behind Viviani of Italy.

WOMEN’S OMNIUM
Great Britain’s representative in this was former World Junior Omnium champion, Laura Trott who covered the opening event, the flying lap in 14.903 to finish the first round in fifth place.

Points race
There was a lucky escape for Laura Trott in the Points race when a rider, pushed down the track by another rider above her, touched Laura’s wheel prior to the first sprint and fell taking two other riders down in the process. Coming up to the second sprint, Laura moved up in the peloton to third wheel and in the sprint for the line was a close third to gain two points.

Two riders then got away after that second sprint, a Russian and German, and took the bulk of the points while Laura sneaked a single point but dropped to 5th after the third sprint. Laura then picked up another point for the fourth sprint but then there was a very quick lap take by the French girl with the peloton happy to let it happen.

Sprint 6 and Laura picked up more points with a slick move on the inside to pick up a rider to lead her out and she netted 3rd and two more points, but was still out of the top three lying in equal 4th. There was nothing in sprint 7 for her and Laura dropped out of the top 7 but a point in the final sprint was enough to give her seventh place in the Points race.

Elimination race

Laura Trott wisely rode the Elimination race from the front, but did find herself getting swamped at times being on the inside but managed to survive using her vast experience of having raced since she was a youngster, finishing first after outsprinting the Polish rider. Not only that, the Welwyn Wheeler also avoided the many crashes which kept delaying the race as it was neutralised while the riders got up and back in the race.

After three races, Laura Trott lies in third place, with 13 points, one behind second and four behind the current leader DORRONSORO of Spain. She has a key event, the Pursuit to come…

WOMEN’S SPRINT

Round 1

In her first round heat, Victoria Pendleton, the Olympic Champion, lead Lithuanian Gabriele Jankute round the track in the early laps with Jankute doing her best to keep Victoria guessing by moving around a lot close behind the GB rider.

As Victoria moved up the track, Jankute went underneath and then tried to pin Victoria to the fence as they opened up the sprint. Victoria came down to pass Jankute, almost clashing as she did, but the Olympic Champion rider was soon and easily round Jankute, cruising to the line to go through to the next round.

Jessica Varnish meanwhile, lead her heat against Frisoni of Italy, riding low on the track before letting the Italian go to the front while keeping the distance close to her rival. With the bell ringing, Jess came from down high on the track before cruising past Frisoni to win through to the next round.

Round 2

In the 1/8th final, Olympic Champion Victoria Pendleton, who has been suffering from injuries up until recently, was unable to prevent Simona Krupeckaite of Lithuania beating her in a sprint to the line and relegating her to the repechages. Having drawn the inside, Victoria took the lead with Krupeckaite sitting real close to the back wheel of Pendleton.

Victoria then took to the blue line and launched her sprint from there and did her best to stop Krupeckaite from coming round her but in the home straight, Krupeckaite  did just that and despite going the long way round, had almost a length on Victoria at the finish line.

Jessica Varnish came up against Clara Sanchez of France in her 1/8th final and having drawn the inside, like Victoria, Jess took the lead, controlling the pace and using all the track before launching her sprint a lap out. It was perhaps a little far as Sanchez not only came up to her but also managed to win the sprint to the line from the final bend and relegate Varnish to the repechage.

Repechage
Victoria Pendleton and Jess Varnish both came up against each other in their repechage along with German rider Miriam Welte. The three up final saw Varnish lead setting a fair pace with Pendleton at the back watching. Varnish then opened up early, but not enough to stop Welte coming past her, giving Pendleton the perfect lead out with the Olympic champion coming past her to win the rep comfortably. Varnish was third.

Quarter final

Match A and Victoria Pendleton came up against the top seed and fastest qualifier Shulika of the Ukraine. Victoria lead the three lap race from the front, keeping the pace fairly quick to prevent any surprises from the Ukrainian. As the bell rang, Victoria launched her sprint but was unable to stop Shulika coming round her and beating her in the sprint to the line.

In Match B, Shulika lead Victoria Pendleton away from the line with the Olympic Champion having to win the race to stay in the competition for a medal. After a lap at the bottom of the track, Shulika went to the fence to try and force Pendleton to the front, and it was there, the two stood still, testing their track stand skills with Shulika  leading them away again.

The speed was now rising and with Pendleton going high and Shulika  staying low, it was the Ukraine girl who lit the burners at the bell and around the final bend, Pendleton managed to come alongside her but was unable to find the speed required to get to the line first down the home straight and it was two nil to Shulika.

5-8 Final

A four up ride with Victoria Pendleton up against Sandie Clair, Kristina Vogel and Simona Krupeckaite. Victoria settled on third wheel before being pushed back one as the pace started to rise and at the bell, the Olympic champion started her run but was never really in the hunt for the win and finished fourth and eight in the competition.

MEN’S SPRINT

The big news of the first session was that Sir Chris Hoy withdrew from the competition due to not feeling well after his flying 200 metre effort. That meant in round 1 of the Men’s Sprint, only Jason Kenny remained in the competition for Great Britain and he faced Andrii Kutsenko of Ukraine.

It was a match that the Olympic Silver medallist won easily. After following Kutsenko in the early laps, a few lengths adrift, Kenny went high on the track, gathering speed as he did so before diving down onto the back wheel of Kutsenko who had started his sprint before Kenny surged past him down the back straight and cruised to the finish line. In the other heats, the results went to seeding as is usual this early in the competition.

Round 2

Round 2 (1/16th final) and Jason Kenny came up against Damian Zielinski of Poland, an experienced and very quick competitor who has taken a few star names out of competitions in the past. Jason drew the inside position on the track for the start and so was required to lead for at least the first half lap.

This Jason did, using all the track and never taking his eyes off the Polish rider as he circled the track. Lap two and out of the saddle, they both gathered speed before Kenny launched the sprint a lap out from the finish. Zielinski  tried to come round him, but stood no chance as Kenny turned the gas on and simply crusied away from his rival. Another round done and dusted for Kenny.

Quarter Final

Match A: Jason Kenny versus Robert Forstermann of Germany, the rider with probably the biggest thighs in the World! This was a best of three and for the first match, Kenny drew the inside.

Forstermann comes to the front and leads Kenny slowly round the bottom of the track, Kenny crouching low, GB coach van Eijden giving Kenny advice as he came down the home straight.

Kenny took the advice, going high on the track before diving to the bottom with Forstermann seemingly running away into the track centre and onto the apron of the track before giving chase. It was too late as Kenny had gone and he sprinted all the way to the finish line.

Match B for the quarter finals and Jason Kenny is already one up against Robert Forstermann of Germany who needed to win this to stay in the competition. He didn’t. Forstermann started on the inside this time and as is normal, lead away very slowly. Kenny three or so lengths behind.

In a scene almost the same as Match A, Kenny nervously followed Forstermann at the bottom of the track, the two of them going up the track with two to go, the pace rising.

Then with a lap and half still to go, Forstermann opens the burners and with Kenny high on the track, the Brit dives down to Forstermann’s back wheel, coming round him on the final bend to win the drag race to the line and go through to the semi final.

Semi Final
Match A: Jason Kenny versus Maximilian Levy who was faster in qualifying. Levy draws the inside  and leads the two of them away from the start line along the bottom of the track for a whole lap of the track before the move up.

Levy goes to the fence and Kenny dives underneath and then holds Levy high before Kenny gets the jump on the German rider and while Levy comes alongside down the outside but Kenny holds on to win by less than half a wheel.

Match B: With Jason Kenny one up against Maximilian Levy, Kenny is drawn on the inside and leads them away at the bottom of the track. Kenny then goes high and Levy goes to the fence to keep an eye on him from behind before Kenny drops to the bottom and almost comes off as he hits the apron at speed before swinging up to the fence, all the while watching Levy.

Levy then took the lead and as Kenny went up the track, Levy jumped him, getting the gap and high on the track, opened the throttle with Kenny chasing but a big gap to close. Into the home straight and Kenny came alongside Levy and despite the throw at the line, Levy got the verdict and it was one all.

Match C: One all and Jason Kenny has to win this against Maximilian Levy if he wants that Gold medal ride. Leading off, Kenny again was ever watchful against a rider who has won the World title before and was faster in qualifying.
The decider was very much like Match B until Kenny tried to dive down the track only for Levy to come under him at the same time and as Kenny changed direction to avoid a clash, his wheels went from under him… down he went, sliding down the track but getting up seemingly unhurt.

So there was to be a fourth ride and yet again these two lined up against each other. In the rerun, the same start as before but quicker now as Kenny led Levy at the bottom of the track, before going high and Levy quickly taking the lead.

The pace was getting ever quicker now and with Kenny trying to stay in touch with Levy, the German rider launched and Kenny tried to pass on the back straight, thought better of it and then tried again on the home straight but ran out of distance and Levy was through two rides to one.

Bronze Medal Ride
The first match for the Bronze medal saw Jason Kenny, who had to do four rides in the semis, versus Denis Dmitriev and it was the Russian who led all the way to the bell when he opened up the sprint, gapping Kenny who went high and had no answer to the Russian’s fast finish. Dmitriev won match A.

In Match B, Kenny led all the way to launching the sprint but Dmitriev was not going to be be denied and he came round Kenny to win in the final metres and take the Bronze medal. Kenny is fourth.

The Gold was won by Kevin Sireau (France)  in two straight rides against  Maximilian Levy of Germany.
