News: Top 5 for Nikki Harris at Euros

Nikki Harris finishes 5th at the European Cyclo-Cross championships in Italy

The 2011 European Cyclo-Cross Championships were held in Italy over the weekend and whilst there were no medals for British riders, Nikki Harris did manage a fabulous 5th place in the Women’s event with Helen Wyman making it two in the top 10 for GB after finishing in 8th place. Winner of the Women’s title was Daphny Van de Brand of Holland.

In the Junior race, the comments on Twitter by Hugo Robinson perhaps sum up that the results don’t always tell the full story. “Frustrating race at the Euros. Got in lead group but punctured and had an epic crash! Double flip trying to hop a ditch. Joe Moses had a cracking ride!!!”

It was a sentiment echoed by one of Britain’s top ‘cross riders a few years ago, Stuart Blunt who was out there with them. “Both lads riding at a pace capable of top 10, not seen that for a while from young British crossers!”

“Looks good for the future. Great ride from Brit juniors at European Cross champs, Hugo Robinson 14th and Joe Moses 17th, but the results don’t tell the full story! Joe crashed on first lap and had to change bikes, 44th and last way out the back first time through pits.”

The title was won by another Dutch rider, Mathieu Van Der Poel. There were no British riders in the Under 23 race which was won by…. you guessed it, another Dutch rider, Lars Van Der Haar.
